Chipmonker
OMG! I'm going to start a debate topic 1 week and 1/2 now. Hopefully that spurs more activity. Total War Is total war justified between countries? Definition Total war describes an international war in which countries or nations use all of their resources to destroy another organized country's or nation's ability to engage in war. The practice of total war has been in use for centuries, but it was only in the middle to late nineteenth century that total war was recognized as a separate class of warfare. Total war is most easily distinguished from other forms of warfare through a blurring and combining of strategy and grand strategy. Examples of Total War - French Revolution --Not exactly - but demonstrates the all out hysteria Sherman's March to the Sea --American Civil War, Atlanta to Savannah. ~ Sixty mile wide path of pure destruction World Wars --Atomic Bombs Dropped on Japan --Rationing / Propaganda So can a country justify total war? Can they use razing techniques on agriculture/industry/businesses? Can a government impose rationings and drafts? ...etc.
.Dan.
When has the world ever been at peace? Even after WWII there were still tensions and hatred.. I think total war can be justified if it is to liberate a nation, to free it from civil war or slavery. If anyone starts thinking I'm referring to George Bush's 'liberation' of Iraq, then they have the wrong idea.
Mike.
I can only see Total War justified if the U.S. is under a direct threat from another country, like Pearl Harbor.
Izzy ♥
I don't think Total War (or actually any type of war) is ever justified per se, though I'll admit that sometimes it is unavoidable. I wish this wasn't so, but it is, and probably will be for quite a few generations yet. This is just a personal opinion, but I firmly believe that there should always be a better way than war. Ellie_Penguin
Even if one country decided to come up with a Peace Agreement, I don't really think anyone would listen to that and still do harm to others and provoque more Wars. I don't like wars and I don't think they're justified. If the politicians want to fight, then they should fight with each other without involving civilians.
