Yay for the ACT!

Congratulations!!! That's awesome! :D I only took the ACT; the science portion intimidated me so I just stuck with the SAT.

If you scored that highly, the PSAT shouldn't be any more difficult if you study lots of grammar and syntax rules! I wish you luck on that one too! :)

You can go on the collegeboard website, make an account, and do practice PSAT/SATs there if that's your sort of study trick! It also helps to keep track of what sorts of problems you need the most help with and what scores you make on the attempts. That helped me a lot when I studied for mine.

People study for those things? Wow times have changed. Congrats on the score though!

I'm confused about the scholarship you mentioned. When I was in school the only way you could get a scholarship from a PSAT score was if you made national merit scholar. Not even finalists got any money, only the NMS winners. Have they changed it, or is that what you're hoping for?

I'm guessing that's what frescort meant. You're right, though--the only way you get the scholarship is as an actual winner. And I honestly have no idea how to win one BEYOND being a finalist. I was a National Merit Scholar--got the scholarship and everything--but someone else at my school was just a finalist. He got the same PSAT score as I did, and a much higher SAT score than I did (1560 to my 1450), so I have no idea what else they looked at to determine winners. I didn't think I was a stronger candidate than he was.

I feel like I should know the answer to this!! I was only a semi-finalist and ended up getting Commended, but the people I know that were finalists did have higher scores than me. I'm fairly certain it's based JUST on PSAT scores, no? As far as future scholarship money though, it depends on what university you are applying to as well, as some will hand out full-rides to National Merit Scholars but also give some scholarships to people that came close and got Commended or what have you.

In any case, getting a good score on the PSAT and consequently winning some kind of award is a great thing to put on resumes when applying for colleges. I'm glad that my suggestion helped, frescort!! ^_^ good luck on hopefully becoming a NM Scholar!

That makes sense. Four people in my graduating class of 25 were finalists but only one of them actually won. All I knew is they were all super smart. I got a 4.0 gpa all throughout high school and I wasn't even in the top 20% of my class once ACT/SAT scores were counted. And my scores weren't awful considering I hadn't taken Algebra 2 when I took the test my final try and I had a 36 in everything but math (31 ACT/no idea SAT). Was there like an essay or something? I thought I remembered one of them mentioning an essay... Now I want to find out the criteria but it's 3am my time so I suppose I should go to bed instead *sigh*

Yep, I even paid for my college textbooks tutoring people.

One thing that I noticed helped people a lot was getting one of the official books and doing some timed tests. They can be found pretty cheap used. From what I observed, it really can make a difference of 50-100 points, if they aren't getting a lot of practice in their classes.
