Finn the Human
hey. I was wondering what are your general views about malling and mall shops in general? All malls are rip off shops. They might have a tiny amount of good price items, and the rest are OVER-PRICED. I do not shop in malls unless the shop wiz shows me. I only buy that item. Some malls might say that they have good prices-maybe a few items but all the others are RIP-OFFS.
cleomiele
I've always been very confused about malls. Like Pratik said, they are usually EXTREMELY overpriced on just about everything. However, when I did some investigating earlier this summer (I was on a shopkeeping kick and thought I might like to join a mall), I learned that the prices are marked up so that the shopkeeper of that part of the mall can easily purchase more merchandise to keep a consistent stock and still make a profit. I honestly don't understand why someone would want to shop at a mall when they could easily find whatever item they wanted for cheaper on the Shop Wizard, but it apparently it's relatively popular, or else there wouldn't be many malls, right? It would be wonderful to be able to make a huge profit with marked-up items from returning customers, but I just don't see the practicality or purpose of it in the end...I'm hoping that someone with a mall shop will respond to this thread and give their perspective! bluebell_rose
;) I posted this to get the general idea of what the thinking is on malling still. Malling has changed. Mall shops that are overpriced don't get the neccessary hits anymore. Nursery Malls is a mall with main marketplace shops, however they too have to price according to the shop wiz or they won't get sales. Malling is not what it used to be. It's now about competitive pricing. I'm a bookshop in a mall. Most of my items are wiz priced save for my 1 np books. My items were wiz priced when I restocked that particular item. However it's now overpriced due to a rapid deflation of the item. I just think that mallers are keeping the economy afloat and keep people from deflating the prices of items to completely worthless and unable for even the newbie restockers to make a profit. My mall has a rule that you need to get at least ten hits a day to your shop. ;) if we were overpriced, we wouldn't be able to follow that ruling. Not saying that your shop is very overpriced but you could always advertise. That is what I do, but my prices are checked and reduced/
The Charismatic Enigma
I always thought malls were mainly there for people on Faerie Quests.
karmacow
I'm not sure I get the point of malls, other than the fun of having one, Although if it's a themed mall, it might be fun to browse if you're interested in that theme. But if you're out for one specific item, going through the shop wizard is by far the easiest way. If you need something from a faerie quest, it's incredibly frustrating to have to sift through pages to find it, without knowing whether that mall even has it. Artios
Usually, the point of malls are for people to buy their necessary items at ONE place instead of SWing all day. (lazy people like me xD) For instance, if someone does training, they'd bookmark or revisit that person's shop for easier access. It's also good for FQers since their SW can't be accessed. From experience, it's only good if you're in a popular mall and have a main market size (~600+). otherwise, your profits aren't going anywhere. I know but I don't shop at malls because after I see one item that I bought, i check the shop wiz and I am RIPPED- OFF. By at least 300NP. (Its not much but......) Rebecca~
I've never seen the point of them, myself, but if you enjoy having one, go for it. I check the SSW for everything though- even if someone says that they've checked and rechecked, I check myself.-shrugs-
gingerew
I don't go to malls because honestly, I'm too much of a cheapskate! I check everything on SSW so unless I knew a mall that did that, guaranteed every time, I wouldn't shop there regularly for all my items. I either buy what I know is cheap from the main shops, or help a neo-friend, by buying an item or two.
tazrandus
When I was a n00b, I would always go to malls (because you know, you're new to the site, browse the site, browse the marketplace, cool a mall selling hundreds of items you've never seen before!) and I would bookmark them and browse through them for nice-looking items that are cheap OTL About a few months after, I discovered the magnificent Shop Wizard and never browsed through them malls again. So yeah, I think it is very effective with attracting Newbies with the flamboyant graphics and whatnot xD
bluebell_rose
well, i'm wiz priced. Some of the hard to stock items aren't exactly at the top of the wiz but kinda in the middle. According to the shop counter stats on neomallers, most of the shops with the highest hits are mallers and most of their hits come from the shop wizard. There goes your theory about mall shops being overpriced.

bluebell_rose
I don't price using ssw, I don't have premie. I price using my catagory of the normal wiz. And when I priced, it was the lowest of the b's in the shop wiz. If it deflated since I last stocked, then I don't know. I had 36 hits yesterday from the shop wiz. :) 12 so far today. Since you claim you don't shop at mall shops, if the shop wiz happened to give you the pricing of an item that's in a mall shop, would you boycott the shop in favor of a non mall shop? I don't have premium either. So I definitely didn't get the cheapest either. I would not boycott a non-mall shop. I would do several searches. In your case to show you I did only 1. And if it was the cheapest, I would only buy that item and nothing else.
Rebecca~
I would never boycott a shop because it was part of a mall- if it was the cheapest, I would definitely shop there. But I do have premium, so I check with the SSW- even when I do use the normal SW, I refresh at least 10 times to make sure I'm getting the cheapest item out there. I'm glad that your shop is working for you though.
dummydumpty
I just use whatever is on the Shop Wizard, which I also refresh quite a few times before deciding to buy something. I don't have an opinion regarding malls in particular, but if it works for someone, good for them. Boycotting sounds silly.
bluebell_rose
my shop counter shows 18 hits via the wiz today. 9 direct hits. Topped off at 36 shop wiz hits yesterday. "if the shop wiz happened to give you the pricing of an item that's in a mall shop, would you boycott the shop in favor of a non mall shop?" -> meaning if the item in question in a mall shop, would you still buy the item or skip over to another shop to buy the item but the shop isn't in a mall. cleomiele
Yeah, it doesn't matter to me if the item I click on in the SW is from a mall shop as long as it's the cheapest one. I think it's interesting though that malls have moved to more competitive pricing over time, as you say, and I'm glad that it's working out for you! I like the IDEA of malls a lot, as I enjoy shop-keeping when I'm active in it. As a shopper though, even if I was on a faerie quest, I would rather go to the neoboards or the forums and have someone find the item for me rather than bookmark a shop that may or may not be overpriced and that may not even have the item I need. I still just don't really get the practicality.
bluebell_rose
:) it's about the hits now, so logically, we need to price lower to get hits and if we don't, we get reprimanded by the mall leadership. though I usually price 3rd price down from the wiz, yet i still get bought out from time to time lol
