What's important are that there are no double standards, and that the rules are reasonable: e.g., looking at a woman or talking to a woman or even having a female friend is not cheating, so long as the intentions are pure. Saying that your partner can't have a friend of the opposite sex is abusive to me. Personally, I'm in an open relationship, although it's turning into an exclusive relationship because of my partner's wishes.
