All I can say is wow:

Half-tonne colossus squid hauled up from the deep

THE giant squid is the stuff of maritime legend but it's got nothing on an extraordinary creature weighing close to half a tonne that's been hauled from Antarctica's icy waters.

Meet colossus squid. Ten metres long. Two massive eyes, each half a metre in diameter.

"There has never been another squid this size captured," stunned squid expert Steve O'Shea said yesterday of the find by New Zealand fishermen in the Ross Sea.

"For over a century, people have talked about the giant squid being the largest squid in the world and it is difficult to break that myth. People didn't want the giant squid toppled, knocked off its throne by this bloody upstart down in New Zealand."

It turns out we aren't the only ones using spears:

Chimps observed making spears

Chimpanzees living on the West African savanna have been observed fashioning spears from sticks and using them to hunt small mammals - the first routine production of deadly weapons observed in animals other than humans.

The chimps were repeatedly seen using their hands and teeth to tear the side branches off long straight sticks and peeling back the bark and sharpening one end of the sticks with their teeth, the researchers report in Thursday's online issue of the journal Current Biology. Then, grasping the weapon in a "power grip," they jabbed into tree-branch hollows where bush babies - small monkey-like mammals - sleep during the day.

After stabbing their prey, they removed the injured or dead animal and ate it.

(CNN) -- If you think an extravagant five-star skyscraper, beach side resort or cliff-side villa is the ultimate hotel experience, then think again. Prepare for a new dimension in luxury lodging ... floating pyramids.

Playstation fans look back in anger

British fans wanting to get their hands on the new Playstation 3 will have to pay £100 more than American users for an inferior machine.

Sony announced yesterday that the European version of its games console will play only a "limited number" of old Playstation 2 titles when it goes to sale next month.

The American model has much better "backwards compatibility" and plays almost all the old games.

Beaver Returns To NYC After 200 Years

A beaver has been spotted in New York City for the first time in more than 200 years, marking the return of an animal once vital to the city's economy and then nearly hunted to extinction.

Biologists with the Wildlife Conservation Society in recent days have photographed a North American beaver they named "Jose" in the Bronx River, a once-filthy waterway that runs through the Bronx Zoo and has since been cleaned up.

"There has not been a sighting of a beaver lodge or a beaver in New York City for over 200 years. It sounds fantastic, but one of the messages that comes out of this is if you give wildlife a chance it will come back," said John Calvelli, a spokesman for the Wildlife Conservation Society, which operates the Bronx Zoo.

The Bronx was once synonymous with urban decay and by the 1970s the Bronx River was used as a dumping ground that was virtually choked off with refuse.

But residents and the city government began to clean it up, an effort aided by US$14.6 million in federal funding secured since 2000 by US Rep. Jose Serrano of the Bronx.

Biologists named the beaver Jose in Serrano's honour, Calvelli said on Friday.

Beaver pelts drove the economy of the former New Amsterdam, when New York City was a Dutch trading post full of trappers. The animal appears on the city seal, which in turn appears on the city flag.

Records show the Dutch purchased 7,246 beaver pelts in 1626 and that by 1671 the renamed New York of British rule traded more than 80,000 pelts a year, Calvelli said.

By 1800, beavers were no longer seen east of the Mississippi River and they were nearly extinct by 1930. Today the species has recovered so much that it has returned to its traditional range, Calvelli said.

Black soya 'cuts diabetes risk'

Eating black soya beans could lower fat and cholesterol levels and may help prevent diabetes, a study suggests.

Yellow soya is already known to lower cholesterol, but black soya is used in traditional oriental medicine as a treatment for diabetes.

The Korean study found rats who got 10% of their energy from black soya gained half the weight of those who had none, Chemistry and Industry reports.

UK diabetes experts warned black soya alone would not prevent the condition.

Fourteen stone child 'risks care'

An eight-year-old boy who weighs over 14 stone (98.9kg) may be taken into care by a local authority.

Connor McCreaddie, from Wallsend, North Tyneside, has lost a stone and a half in two months, but still prefers processed food to fruit and vegetables.

His mother, Nicola McKeown, has been called to a child protection conference with the local authority on Tuesday.

Family support may be offered, but the last resort would be for North Tyneside officials to place Connor into care.

Connor's pre-Christmas weight of 15 stones and eight pounds (92.5kg) is four times the weight of a healthy child of his age.

He has lost weight after beginning an intensive exercise regime and introducing some healthy food into his diet.

The eight-year-old does have a bike and a trampoline which he uses, but he has to stop after around 10 minutes because he becomes out of breath and can vomit.

He has difficulty dressing and washing himself, misses school regularly because of poor health and is a target for bullies.

Jaguar Kills Zookeeper At Denver Zoo

A male jaguar killed a zookeeper at the Denver Zoo and employees put the animal down, police said.

"I can confirm that a female worker was killed and we're still conducting an investigation," Denver Police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.

According to a statement posted on the zoo's website (www.denverzoo.org), the 6-year-old jaguar attacked the unidentified worker inside its enclosure late Saturday morning. Armed employees entered the enclosure to retrieve the injured woman when the cat threatened them.

"The jaguar approached staff trying to assist the zookeeper and it was shot and killed," the statement said.

The mauled worker was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead, Jackson said. Her identity and age were not released.

The zoo was closed after the incident, but the public was never in danger, zoo officials said.

The 64 kg jaguar, named Jorge, came to the Denver Zoo from the Santa Cruz Zoo in Bolivia in March 2005 after he was orphaned in the wild. This month, the zoo announced it had obtained a 16-month-old female jaguar to breed with Jorge.

That's just sad - dying just before it was about to start breeding.

Prince Charles calls for 'ban' on McDonald's

THE Prince of Wales threw his weight into the debate about healthy eating today and told a nutritionist that the "key" was to ban McDonald's fast food restaurants.

The controversial remarks were made as the Prince was in Abu Dhabi attending the launch of a public health awareness campaign aimed at fighting diabetes in the United Arab Emirates.

He visited the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre and watched as a group of children chose from a selection of “good” and “bad” snacks for their school packed lunches.

Talking to Nadine Tayara, a nutritionist from the centre who had put the children through their paces, he asked her: “Have you got anywhere with McDonald’s? Have you tried getting it banned? That’s the key.”

If McDonald's was banned, I'd just go to KFC or Pizza Hut :D .

Danger: Beware of Birds

The risk of avian influenza may be high, but the risk of market panic as a result is even higher. Either way, the economic effects could be devastating

An outbreak of avian influenza amongst humans will happen sooner or later, it is virtually a mathematical certainty.

The H5N1 virus is going through a process of trial and error that will eventually see it able to jump easily between mammals. It is just a matter of time before it develops a shape best suited to bypass the immune systems of animals like pigs and, perhaps shortly after, humans. And that will be the beginning.

This outbreak may or may not be very virulent; it may or may not be lethal. It may kill only chickens or 150 million people. It may be highly localized or it may span the globe.
