Sometimes they just wander. I think it's something to do with server communication. Or they're just meant to have some degree of "free will." If you want them to stay harvesting the resource where you put them, just fence them in. This also makes them harvest quicker, apparently. Place decorations in the squares around the resource, leaving one open directly beside it to put your P3s in. They can't get out, so they have to stay at the resource. Anything harvested magically appears in the storage.

See how the p3 is surrounded? Keeps them from wandering away.

currently at lvl 10 and only have 4 soldiers

At level 10, you wont have any more than 5 or 6 pests attacking at once, if that many. I only had 3 Soldiers until level 30, and nothing bad ever happened to my resources. If they do a little damage to a building, it's super easy to fix, and you'll get experience points when your soldiers or workers fix it, which will help you level up faster. A good rule for soldiers I've found is 1 for every 10 levels is enough.

Level 10+under=1 soldier

11-20=2 soldiers

21-30=3 soldiers

31-40=4 soldiers

41-50=5 soldiers.

I find even now when I'm at level 50, if one of my soldiers dies and I can't replace it right away and it's running awhile with 4, there's no major problems.

If you're looking to level up quickly, you should have the bear minimum in terms of soldiers. Accordingly, if you leave your habi open all the time, you're better to have lot of workers and 3 or 4 nesters. If you can't leave your habi open, then it's usually better to have more nesters and try to check it once an hour to discard eggs. When the habitarium is closed, the workers can max out their harvesting until the next time you open the page. If it's left open, the only time they stop generating np is if the resource near them gets damaged or they get too tired to harvest.

Accordingly, if you're using the fencing in method, try to fence them in adjacent to at lest 2 resources i.e, 2 puddles of mud, two trees, a rock and a tree, etc. That way, if one DOES happen to get damaged, they will move to the other one.

I've got my workers stuck between 3 trees, a grarrl tooth decoration, a fence decoration and a house. They have 3 trees to harvest from in case something happens to one of them.

Also, they don't have to be completely surrounded to be blocked in. They can only move up and down and sideways. You only need to block off those 4 directions (not the diagonals) to keep them from escaping. Though they cannot move diagonally, I've found that if their directly diagonal to a resource, they can still harvest from it. Weird
