Paint brush clothing vs. lab ray clothing

Do you get to keep the PB clothes if you paint your pet another color? For example, if you have a faerie pet and paint it desert, do you keep the faerie clothes in your closet? Could you then put those faerie clothes on another pet of the same species?

I'm asking because I've zapped my pet so many things, and those items are in my closet, but it looks like I can't use them.

Yes, you would keep the Faerie clothes. And if it's the same Species pet that can be customized (i.e. Not Baby, Mutant, etc.), you can put it on that Neopet.

In fact, this is called Twice-painting or Cross-dressing a pet. Try http://www.neopets.com/~ColtzanIII for a guide (go to the first one).

It's also called cross-painting. You can get a lot of really unique looks by mixing and matching PB clothes with other colors. If you use entire sets, you get to say, for example, "I have a Christmas-Starry Lupe". Also, you don't need to have changed the color of the pet in question to use those clothes on another pet of the same species- It's actually fairly common for someone to have, say, two Aishas, paint one Christmas and the other Desert, and then swap their clothes.

I agree with what the other said but just so you're clear on the faerie side of things, the only pet that actually has clothes when painted faerie is a usul (bow and bracelets) and Bruce (bowtie). All other pets that are faerie do not have clothing, aka, you would not say be keeping the faerie wings of the species if that's what you were interested in.

Ah thank you for the explanation! I didn't know it was a popular thing to do.

It's still pretty frustrating, however, to look in my closet and see all the beautiful clothes that are greyed out because they came from the lab rather than a PB. Back in the day it changed my usul into SO MANY colors before it ever changed her species, so I have a ton of unusable usul clothes. Now it seems the ray only changes a pet's color once or twice before the species changes again and it resets to a basic color.... hrmph!

Umm, they are greyed out not because they came from the lab ray but presumably because they are not the same species. There is no way to tell the difference between lab ray clothing and paintbrush clothing, they are exactly the same thing.

Even when I try to dress the right species of pet, it doesn't let me use it. For example, I have an elephante and in trying to dress her, I can't use any of my old lab ray elephante clothes. Only the lab ray clothes are greyed out in my closet, and none of my PB clothes are. Am I doing something wrong?

I think that's right, dasavo, I've heard that's the rule for all baby pets and at least some mutants.

And everyone was right! I adopted an usul to try it (although I had to put him back in the pound) and the clothes looked great. Thanks for all this info!

Mutant, Baby, and Maraquan can only wear clothing that is specific to the color. (Mutant cape for example). Their body types are so different from the others that they can't wear normal clothing, which was the reason for the mass conversion, to standardize the body types in order to allow for customization.
