Improving Account Security

 

First of all, let's get this straight. Anybody at ANY time can get into ANY account if they so choose. Anybody that chooses to learn how to do so, at least. There have been at least two times in the past when the Neopets Database was breached... both times almost resulted in a lawsuit and both times, accounts, etc. were compromised. This guide will cover how to secure your belongings as best as possible so that if your account is compromised, you will you hardly anything. This guide will also cover how to make it nearly impossible for the average malicious mind to get into your account.

 

Emails:

-Use a different email for Neopets than you do with everything else

-Don't let your email get purged... more info on this can be found in my thread in the General Neopets section

-If possible, create your email using a proxy or even from another computer so as to not draw a connection between your account and the email

-For the same reason above, your username, password, and email should be unrelated. If your username is supergirl, supergirl1 isn't much of a password. If your ussername is supergirl and your email is [email protected], you're opening up a large breach in your account security.

-Change your email password frequently

 

Account Info:

-Change your account info frequently (once a month is fine)

-Use a pin that isn't your birthdate, etc.

-Use a false birthdate if possible, or if you use your real one, use a false one elsewhere

-Don't use a security question on your email, use an alternative email (not yahoo, gmail, or hotmail preferably)

 

Other Account Crap:

-Don't be neofriends with your side accounts and don't link to them on your userlookup, etc.

-Use a different email for your main than your sides

-Put a lot of your stuff on your sides... don't keep your eggs in one basket

-(optional) Buy Neocash... it does, sadly, get you favored. Premium does not make a difference anymore

 

 

*** Neopets is most definitely not the most secure out there... using the same password, email, anything as something important like a PayPal account is just asking to get your crap stolen

In response to piticent on the other thread...

 

When were these database breaches you speak of?

 

They were both years ago... the first reset the stats of the pets of anyone that posted on the BDC that day, the second changed someone's petpage and got them frozen (there was a lot of drama involved before that).

 

There were other breaches as of recent but those don't show onsite because they didn't change anything on neo... they just took the info and compared it to paypal lists, email lists, etc.

 

If their password on neo and paypal was the same... well goodluck to them :P
