Guest iYoshinho
It is kinda annoying how when someone posts but do not know it is over 2 weeks old and a moderator edits the post so wouldn't it be better if you just had the topics get locked after 2 weeks? Using some sort of Multi-Moderation tool or something? I am sure it is in the admin cp somewhere. Thanks for answering my suggestion. Spritzie
To simplify this, I'll post a reply TJ made when this question was asked once before. At this point, it doesn't look like it's possible, unless things have changed since he posted this, which one of the admins would be able to verify. I'd like to thank everyone for their feedback on this matter. Unfortunately, the forums software does not have the capability to auto-lock topics two weeks after the last post in them. This is more complicated than it sounds to program. The Daily Neopets staff has looked into options, such as mods locking topics or an auto-lock feature, in the past and we have chosen not to do them for numerous reasons. That being said, at this time, we feel that it is best to leave things how they currently are since there hasn't been a huge issue in the 4+ years these forums have been around. This topic has sparked an interest amongst the staff again and we have come to the same conclusion. We do appreciate members feedback and input as it helps us make tdn forums a better place and we always take what you guys have to say into consideration. Guest iYoshinho
Well I can dig in and look for it as I have an available IPB 3.1.4 copy right now. Also there is a huge update (3.2) coming for IPB which might include it.
antiaircraft
Software capability isn't the only issue here however. The 21-day rule has never been a solid practice, and we have always allowed for topics to be revived after that limit, as long as the reviving post contributes significantly to the discussion. Automatic locking would probably be somewhat counter-productive in that respect.
Anime
At this point in time, there are actually a few topics that we allow to be posted on after three weeks of no posts. I highly doubt such a feature would allow for certian specific topics to remain unlocked past the end date, making an auto-lock, if anything, more of a hassle to deal with. And even then, topics that are inactive for that long tend to drop off the first page of threads. Also- three weeks inactive, not two. Guest iYoshinho
What about a major group like HAMS? Is that worthy of bypassing the old topic rule? Oh yeah 3 weeks I have been on JN where there use 2 weeks for a long time and not TDN.
Anime
If a group thread has been inactive for three weeks, I feel it's safe to say that the group itself is dead well. As such, group threads are not eligible for bypassing this rule. If you feel the time is truely ripe for a revival, then I see no problem with creating a group v2 thread, but the original thread is not to be revived. However, please note that if the v2 thread dies as well then a v3 thread will not be allowed, as dying twice is as good an indicator as any that the group is not going to survive. biscuitchinois
Why are we obligated to post 7 words and + If I want to say Thanks I'm obligated to post more than 7 words :(
Guest iYoshinho
You are also obligated not to post in 3 week old topics cause that is also a rule :P This post has been edited by a member of staff (Anime) because of a violation of the forum rules. Do not backseat moderate. Simply report the post in question and move on. Please check your user inbox to see if you have been contacted regarding this incident, then review our rules. Anime
As it stands, he happens to have posted right ON the 3 week mark. The rule states that you are not to post on a topic that is MORE than three weeks old. Right on the mark is still ok, though if someone were to post on the three week mark simply to keep the thread open (and not to add soemthing useful), it would be considered spam.. To answer your question, both are to help prevent spam. Having each post be at least 7 words long ensures that the posts contribute in some at least slightly significant way to the topic at hand (if you simply want to thank them for answering a question, for example, elaborate on why it helped you or something). The three week rule prevents topics from being revivied when they likely contain out of date information or have all ready been fully addressed. Some areas and specific topics are not subject to this rule because they remain constantly useful but have the potential to die out some. Such exceptions from the rules are always noted in the first post of a thread.
