Gun Control

Mmkay, after reading that last post I have to say something. I'm not American, so I'm not familiar with your Constitution or how things work down there, but I'll give it a whirl.

The second amendment is there to prevent a situation in which the police and military are the only ones allowed to have guns.

It seems that the second amendment is there, in part, to protect the United States' right to a well-regulated militia. It's not a preventative clause, but rather one that upholds the country's right to militia and the individual's right to possess weapons. This is from a site I stumbled across on Google: "The opposing theories, perhaps oversimplified, are an ''individual rights'' thesis whereby individuals are protected in ownership, possession, and transportation, and a ''states' rights'' thesis whereby it is said the purpose of the clause is to protect the States in their authority to maintain formal, organized militia units."

In that situation, if a president decides to take complete and total control of our nation, who is going to stop him/her?

Let's be realistic here. That's never going to happen in America. Don't you guys have a Senate? Voters who wouldn't elect a power-hungry despot? The US is a democracy, not a dictatorship. However, for the sake of argument, let's say your President did go rogue. Somebody clever/crazy enough to grab hold of that kind of power isn't going to be brought down by a couple of Joe Smiths from South Carolina waving guns they bought at WalMart. (Not a dig at South Carolinians; my mom's from there. Just an example. XP)

Anyone who tries to stand up to authority would just get shot. The only way for those in charge and those of us being "protected" to be on equal ground is to allow people to protect themselves (and not just from criminals).

So, what you're saying is that if a drug dealer were to shoot a police officer who was trying to arrest him, he'd be justified because he feared that he himself was going to get shot? If police shot everyone who stood up to their authority then half the country would be dead.

And to say that citizens and police/military need to be on 'equal ground' is a bit absurd. The police/military have undergone years of specialized training in order to protect the general population, who have not undergone that training and are therefore unfit to protect themselves in certain situations. What I'm getting from this is that, if everyone has a gun, then they need to protect themselves from other people with guns (criminal or not), and if people need to protect themselves from basically everyone they don't know, then what's the point of even having a military or a police force? Law enforcers are there to ensure that people don't need to protect themselves from criminals (obviously that's a big generalization, because police aren't going to catch every single crook out there, but hopefully my point is being made), not to ensure that people have more to worry about.

What it seems jubinator is hinting at is total anarchy, where authority is so untrusted that it's abolished completely, and everyone merely dishes out their own justice as they see fit. The thing is, police and military have rules and protocol to follow in how they protect people and deal out punishment; individual groups of people don't.

Plus, let's face it, owning guns won't stop the military from taking over if they really wanted to. Think about it, what's a pistol going to do against tanks rolling down your streets?

Once again, I don't think that'll ever happen, because the military are people - they have family and friends, and they wouldn't want to wage war against most of America and risk their lives.

Do anything but what we are doing now! Severe limits on types of guns people can own, traceable bullets and applying and purchasing guns with strict registration process, and especially how many bullets can be loaded at one time. USA is owned by the powerful NRA and it is responsible for the slaughter of many innocent people.

Alright, The whole point of the 2nd Amendment if you read between the fine lines is the basic right to protect yourself in this country. Without this amendment there is no law to protect yourself against criminals, government, or any of the above. I know guns are bad, I've debated this same thing in my mind for a while. Take away the guns and we have no problems right? WRONG! The criminals would still find a way to get the guns, they don't care about the law remember? They will still possess the weapons no matter what. And so this would make our country even more dangerous than it already is since it's citizens have no right to protect themselves. But yea, basically the law amendment was put into place to give Americans the RIGHT to protect themselves from danger and our enemies. :P

But yes I do agree that there can and should be stricter regulations on the types of guns people can own and also the license to own a gun itself.

I honestly don't know what we have in America now a days. Our whole Congress seems to be only concerned with their own careers rather than the well-being of the American people. The whole thing with Weiner and that scandal proved to me that our Congress is filled with a bunch of idiots. I think our Congress and Senate is corrupt. I honestly think we're on the verge of turning into a socialist nation now with the idiot we have as president now.. it's pathetic.
