I've played neopets for over 6 years and right now I am trying to increase my avatar count, currently sitting at 230 avatars. I'm pleased you've already found a useful aspect of the site, and if you stick around, you'll find plenty more. Especially the members! We're a fairly helpful bunch, and (for the most part) really friendly. Our only condition is that you follow the rules. Yeah I like the TDN avatar checklist as it has a section that lists which avatars you still need to get and tells you how to get them.
