Journalists generally refrain from using the term 'upside-down' to describe the results of a day in the Altador Cup, just in case somebody out there managed to predict things accurately and get the jump on them. Well, they're using it now. Yesterday saw what was probably the most incredible array of upsets and general surprises in all the sixteen days of the tournament that have passed. The results table is, well and truly, upside-down, and the exploits that so many teams pulled off yesterday point to a lot more to come.

Where do I start? Rhetorical questions aside, we had several teams that normally reside at the bottom of the leaderboard secure some shocking victories yesterday.

The Moltaran Magmas, firing on all cylinders after their match against Virtupets the day before, won Make Some Noise and Shootout Showdown against the Brightvale Wizards. A methodical, coordinated strategy allowed the beleaguered team to rally its supporters and (just like they did against the Robots) swipe its unsuspecting competitors aside in two of the day's side games. The Wizards won the match overall when they scored victories in the other two games, but they didn't get the points they were hoping to obtain from the match, and it may be difficult for them to make their way back up the standings. For the Magmas, however, the morale boost from their results in the past two days is worth far more than the scoreboard points (which are still fairly meagre), and may just propel them to their first overall victory in due time.

"From here," announced Moltaran team captain Aldric Beign, "things are only going to get better!"

Team Faerieland showcased their team spirit in an exemplary fashion yesterday, taking their never-say-never attitude and tireless gameplay to new heights. It was worth it - the Faeries came away from the match with another shocker, beating the Terror Mountain Chillers in Yooyuball! With the match decided, the Chillers' supporters nevertheless pushed back as hard as they could, winning all three side games (including, of course, Shootout Showdown). It was a narrow victory for the Faeries, but Yooyuball wins are rare for this squad, and all signs indicate that their supporters are as happy as ever with their second green Yooyuball mark of the season.

In yet another hotly contested match, the Altador Suns triumphed over Team Kiko Lake, drawing in Shootout Showdown and winning Yooyuball, while the Kikos took the remaining games. Underdogs they may be, but the Kiko Lakers have always been tenacious Yooyuballers, and few analysts were prepared for the outcome of Altador's hard-hitting game plan.

While not that many reporters or spectators pay close attention to the bottom tier, it does have some genuinely brilliant team play emerge more often than you might think, and match-ups involving underdog teams can be just as intense as the powerhouse versus powerhouse classics.

Moving closer to the middle of the table, we have what were probably yesterday's less remarkable matches. The Haunted Woods Zombies upheld their reputation as one of this year's better Yooyuball teams, with Zo Junior slipping past the Tyrannian squad's slim defence to win the day without much difficulty. However, the Fossils were clearly back to their usual side gaming selves. Tyrannian supporters actually organised a full-blown party in the Colosseum for the match, and the attendance (along with the result) was terrific. Slushie Slinger, Make Some Noise, and Shootout Showdown were won decisively by the Fossils. After all, compared to a bunch of festive Tyrannians, even Dancer Zombies look a little drab.

A similar result emerged from the day's match between the Virtupets Robots and the Shenkuu Ninjas - the Robots won Yooyuball, while the Ninjas slung, cheered, and scored their way to victory in all three side games. Comparing this outcome to the teams' track records, it's still fairly ambiguous as to whether Virtupets will manage to bounce back into tier one, or how much longer the Ninjas will take to start cutting down opposing teams with the same relentless precision they've shown at critical points in past years.

The teams from Krawk Island and Roo Island also faced each other yesterday, in another one of those classic rematches between old rivals. This match has gone both ways in the past, but it was the Roos who had the upper hand in this match. The Pirates were louder, and about equal with the Roos when it came to slushie serving, but there was less of a contest in the Yooyu sports, with Roo Island taking Yooyuball, Shootout Showdown, and the overall result.

The Mystery Island Natives, never the most consistent of teams, were more than slightly off their game yesterday, losing everything but Slushie Slinger to Team Kreludor. The points from this match allowed the Moons to hang on to a third place ranking in group one, but with Meridell and Maraqua on their tail, Kreludor's days in the top four may be numbered. Then again, considering the Moons' record, that's hardly the safest prediction to make.

The Knights and the Mermaids demonstrated some serious firepower against their opponents, the Lost Desert and the Darigan Citadel respectively. In an impressive show of force, the 4th and 5th ranked teams took on the leaderboard's current top seat and runner-up, overpowering the Marauders and Minions in Yooyuball, and pulling reasonably even in Shootout Showdown (Maraqua edged ahead of the Citadel in this one however). It wasn't a total victory for the upstarts, as both the Desert and Darigan Citadel retaliated in Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise, but it was a win nevertheless, and a nail in the coffin for a lot of scepticism concerning their ability to stand up to the more well known powerhouses. Team Meridell doesn't yet have a fancy name for their spectacular top form gameplay, but for the Maraquans: Piranha Mode it is!

Notable matches coming up in today's schedule: the 2nd ranked Citadel takes on the Shenkuu Ninjas, aiming for group one; the top-ranked Lost Desert looks for a recovery against the Virtupets Robots, who are seeking a recovery of their own; the Faeries and the Kikos, two motivated teams with a lot to prove, cross guards with each other; the resolute Maraquan Mermaids take on the determined Team Haunted Woods; Team Meridell attempts to dig its boots deeper into group one in their match against Mystery Island, a team inclined to flex their awesome quantity of Yooyuball muscle at unpredictable moments; the Moltaran Magmas turn their flames on Roo Island, who will be trying to avoid an upset and grab as many points as possible; Altador goes head-to-tail with the Tyrannian side gamers... pretty much everything. I'll stop mindlessly listing matches now. Boy, after yesterday, the last day of round one is going to be as intense as ever, and us reporters are in dire need of more camera crews!

Good luck everybody! This is AA, reporting from Altador, signing off.

"From here," announced Moltaran team captain Aldric Beign, "things are only going to get better!"

Oh, you got that right!

As I have said previously, we're just at a slow start. But come the second round, and we'll be owning all teams.

Heh, we all knew you guys (and girls) had it in ya! ;) It's always fun to see a slow team pick up and get some wins.

Additionally, I'd been waiting for all of round one for Moltara to put up a great performance, just so I could use the phrase 'firing on all cylinders' in a news report. :P

Very nice report AA, colorful and informative. Come on Maraqua! We need a sweep today or a great loss for Kreludor, then we're in the top 4 baby!

Yes, and we can totally beat Haunted Woods

Bad part... my brother is on Haunted Woods and the last match of the first round is bro VS bro, so I'm gonna be playing games like never before! BRING ON THE PIRANHAS!!!!!

the Faeries came away from the match

Congrats FL! (same to ashley!)

even Dancer Zombies look a little drab.

I think it needs a "Back up Dancer Zombie"!

overpowering the Marauders and Minions in Yooyuball

Wow! :O the Knights won! Really impresive!

Team Meridell doesn't yet have a fancy name for their spectacular top form gameplay

"Kingdom Invasion Mode"? nope, it's more appropriate for pirates and minions. How about "Divide and Conquer"?

but for the Maraquans: Piranha Mode it is!

Now I'm scared!

the 2nd ranked Citadel takes on the Shenkuu Ninjas

Go Shenkuu GO!!!

Nice report!

and GOOOOOOOO MOLTARA! thumbsup_anim.gif

Glad to see we're picking up the pace, we just gotta keep going like this. I think it helps that most schools in the states have let out for the summer so students have more time to play.

I'm trying to sound more awe-struck each day, but seriously! You guys are driving me nuts here. Amazingly great playing as always, can't wait to see the results tomorrow! The top six are absolutely incredible teams and earn my awesome respect. And no one shall be underestimated ever again, especially on days like this. There may be no such thing as a low tier anymore.

Congratulatory rounds are on me! :woot:

The Knights' Charge :)

Those are nice.. any other suggestions (specially from those who support MD here)

Indeed! We'd appreciate any suggestions for this, and other elements of our coverage. :)

However, I do have a favourite from the suggestions so far...

I was thinking seige mode for MD.

EPIC STARCRAFT REFERENCE! xD xD xD

Wouldn't that SC reference make Siege Mode a better fit for VP then? Seeing as MD has absolutely nothing to do with space and siege isn't theme-specific in any other way :rolleyes_anim:

Hammertime would then be a better fit for MD (WC3 paladins, reference to MC hammer  )

You have a good point there.

Seriously, don't mind my StarCraft obsession - I'm a bit too geeky in that respect. xD
