Well, the first day of any Altador Cup season is generally a day for surprises, but this one had more upsets and shocking developments than you can shake a stick at!* Many an established powerhouse suffered a rude awakening at the hands of an underdog that managed to catch them unawares, teams that didn't really seem all that exciting got off to explosive starts, and everybody on the field pretty much performed in blatant violation of all our expectations. Not bad for only twenty-four hours of play.

Our first surprise of the day: Team Faerieland, historically a weak opponent on all fronts, managed to pull off a win in Slushie Slinger against the defending champions, Krawk Island! While they still lost overall, the Faeries have shown that they have the potential to push past their sagging reputation, and they just might have a spark of hope for a strong showing this year after all.

Maraqua and Meridell have been Altador Cup nemeses since year one, and with the Mermaids' exhilarating finish last season, it was only to be expected that they would sweep Team Meridell right off the court. That wasn't to happen however. The Knights rapidly turned the tables on their opponents, taking Yooyuball and Make Some Noise to claim a resounding victory. The disappointed Maraquans slunk off with only a Slushie Slinger draw and a Shootout Showdown win to their names. Slim pickings, but then, the Mermaids have often been fairly slow starters.

Teams Tyrannia and Virtupets both upheld their side game champion titles in their match, with the Fossils slinging their way to victory in Slushie Slinger, while Virtupets demonstrated their lightning-fast calculation skills with a win in Shootout Showdown. It was the squad from the space station that won the day however, claiming the decisive Yooyuball victory despite yielding Make Some Noise to the Tyrannians.

We were anticipating a close match between the island teams from Mystery Island and Roo Island, and while the islanders did draw in Yooyuball, the Roos secured a firm grasp on the side games early on. They didn't let go, winning all three to claim a clear victory. The Lost Desert Mummies looked like they would have an easy day against Team Terror Mountain - and they won, but it's clear that the Chillers were no pushover. Team Terror Mountain drew Slushie Slinger and even grabbed a victory in Shootout Showdown against their vastly more powerful opponents.

The first day of the season also saw no less than three clean sweeps. The first, Team Kreludor's victory over the Haunted Woods Zombies, was enough to raise eyebrows, but not particularly out of the ordinary. Teams Altador and Brightvale really stood out however. The hosts managed a spectacular victory against the newcomers from Team Moltara, despite general analyst consensus on the opposite outcome. And to say that the returning Team Brightvale's success came completely out of the blue would be a massive understatement - they completely stunned everyone with a crushing defeat of the Darigan Citadel, something which, looking at the teams' track records, must have been no mean feat.

And finally, in what may very well be the most significant upset of today's round-up: the Kiko Lakers pulled off a repeat - well, not quite, more of an epic respin - of their first match last year, scoring a brilliant Yooyuball win against one of the favourites for this year's championship, the Shenkuu Ninjas! While the Ninjas dominated most of the side games, they simply couldn't keep up with the Kikos' fierce, focused game plan when it came to the main event. Determination and an unquenchable spirit are the defining traits of the underdog team from Kiko Lake, and if they can consistently maintain this kind of performance throughout the season, they may very well rise through the ranks like never before.

Well, that's all of yesterday's matches. As for our matches to watch in the next twenty hours or so, well, with what we've seen so far, AC V is going to be a very exciting tournament all over! There are certainly plenty of reporters out there wishing for extra eyes and ears! Good luck everybody!

* As a matter of fact, the developments were so shocking that a mob of spectators in various states of confusion, elation, and anger surrounded the Colosseum's score counting office moments after the results were announced. Unfortunately, our on-field HQ is located directly beside this office, which is why today's report was so late. We've called in some contractors to install emergency exits so that this doesn't happen again.

*gasp* Whoah, no one saw this coming! o_O

I guess I learned one thing: Never underestimate a team based on their history. They may just come back and dominate you.

I am so gutted over the SHenkuu results. I personally had a great yooyooball day yesterday (playing with Shenkuu) and I thought Kiko Lake would be an easy introduction into this years tournament.

How wrong I was.

Kiko Lake supporters must've done some serious hustling. Congrats Kiko Lake!

Well, that ain't happening again! We've rallied and DC isn't letting this match slip away. Yesterday was like someone throwing cold water in my face and many other teams faces and it overall has pushed us all over at the DC minions to show that was nothing more than our ego getting in the way. I wen't up 1 rank yesterday, today i've gone up 3. My freind Bob, he's maxed in SHSH both days now. We're getting better. xD

Although, i'm really happy about FL winning SS. I have a soft spot for the muffin lovers. xD

Not a bad first day :) Although, there seemed to be a lot of people wondering whether or not TNT had messed up some of the scores -.-

As Brightvale did so well, I've been playing hard all day to try and make an impact while we play them.

Good luck all!
