I Wish They Would Do Away With It!

Recommended Posts

I tried again to get into my old account, but alas, the stupid date of birth thing prevented that despite the password being correct.

It really is frustrating and makes me afraid of typing in the wrong password someday on my oldest and current accounts, in case I get locked out of them.

TNT should do away with the d.o.b. thing and replace it with something else. Like a security question you can make yourself. Or even a thing like the password sender, where it sends the d.o.b. to your email address.

Oh yeah, I had this problem when I took this humongous break from Neopets years ago.

What I did was send an report to Neopets, and I remember filling in a lot of wacky details about myself/the account, like what neopets have I created, what were some previous passwords used, blah blah blah. I think the form is originally for something else, but I wrote that I was missing my date of birth in the comments section, explaining how I didn't want my real birthday on it at the time that I created the account, etc.

And then, I got an email with my birthdate! ^_^

And now, I keep all the information user/pass/bday for all my accounts in a word document so that I don't ever have the same problem :D

So yup, just talk to them. I'm sure you'll be able to access your account again.

Or... you could just put your birthdate :laughingsmiley:

I think a lot of people just hit the back button once the DOB thing appears. Then you don't have to enter it again.

@shadows4fairy Wow that's awesome! Remember all the details you can, VJ! Hopefully they'll give you the date :D

They should. I remember putting a fake birthday on my account cause when I joined I was 10.

But by putting the d.o.b thing, it could cause people to lose acounts that people worked hard on.

Nelle: Yeah, I do. Hahaha!

It's on an old account. "Odrese". I dunno why I didn't put the real info in. I don't even remember doing it on my first ever account. >_o

:laughingsmiley: HeeHeeHee

I just looked Odrese up.. Hopefully you remember your "other" birthday, looks like a good account with cute pets! well.. except the wocky - I can't see him ;)

I got a fake birthday on my main account, but was lucky to find it. I figured out the date of birthday by myself on another old account by just trying all the dates (but I knew the age thanks to neofriends).

I agree it's a stupid privacy method.. but it works, however TNT should be more friendly and reply with your birthday rather than say 'this account has been inactive for too long, we won't give your birthday'. (because that is what they do).

I agree too that a special question would be nicer.

I think it is a stupid thing to ask, because many other important documents need your birthday as part of a registation process (my internet banking, for example!), so I use my friends birthday insted. I think its a really really good security question, but almost too good... If any body found it out it could (possibly) be more damaging than just a million virtual neopoints lost... There are loads of reasons to use a fake birthday!

I do agree it should be a secret question instead. Also, these are much harder to guess...

I'd love it if they did secret question! How would it be harder to guess? I think the point of them are for you to put down little quirks or funky details about yourself that people normally be able to answer xD

Like my staple secret question is: "What was the stupidest thing you've ever done?"

And I know the answer to that, oh yes I do...

When I came back to Neopets after 11 months, I tried to access my old account. It asked me for my birthday. I tried my birthdate, but that didn't work. I didn't know what to do. Finally I remembered what date I used - the birthdate of my favorite Harry Potter character

A secret question is a good idea. I think it's easier to remember an answer to a question then a birthdate.

They deleted the oldest account I can remember having. It was called shiny_paper. It doesn't exist anymore. So yeah, the birthday thing is irrelevant for me.

The oldest account I had was deleted too. I'm not sure why. I hadn't been on neo for a while though.

I understand why they have this security function, but I do agree that it could be better handled. A security question would be much more effective because I used to put random birth dates on all my old accounts. Luckily, I'm friends with myself so I can see the age, but waiting for it to change so I can find out the date is so tedious.

I kind of see the issue with the DOB protection. Personally, I would use my real DOB, or I would make a change that was slightly different, but easy to remember later. Like, same day, and year, but a different month, perhaps one before or after my real one. Something like that.

Security questions to me, I could see getting me in trouble. Like the question of favorite author, or musician. It all depends on when I answered the question, as to what my answer would be.

Often secret questions are more along the lines of mother's maiden name or your first pet. I never saw the point in not using your real birth date before, but I get it now. Lots of people know my birthday (we have a page on my guild dedicated to birthdays, and birthdays are often mentioned when they're coming up), and on other sites, birth dates are often publicly viewable. Not much good for security. The only time it's really used is if you haven't signed on in a while though. If it asks for your birthday after you mess up your password, you can just hit the back button and try again without your birthday.

I don't like questions like that. The mother's maiden name, the street you grew up on. If someone does some research, or knows you somehow, they can find that stuff out. Like most of the kids I went to high school with, know the make/model of my first car, which is a popular question for bank accounts.

But that's a good point about b-days too. I'm very private about my personal info.

For my online banking personal questions, they can ask four different ones, all of the same sort: favourite cartoon character, mother's maiden name, favourite make of car or something like that. And so I just chose one random word that didn't make any particular sense as an answer for any of the categories. That way, I can never get one wrong or forget what I put--it won't change, like my favourite movie or whatever. Easy to remember, hard to crack.

My previous (read: super old) Neopets account is still a mystery to me; the email address I used to create it is now inactive, and I can't remember what my username was :sad01_anim: but I'm pretty sure I had a Kau way back then too. Who knows, it may be long gone. Oh well :rolleyes_anim: not the end of the world.
