Stem Cell Research

^Buddhism is a family of beliefs and practices considered by most to be a religion. And throughout the world Christianity is not the dominant religion. :)

Haha maybe considered by most but it's wrong. Trust me, my grandparents are Buddhists, I'd know. They don't consider it a religion.

It's basically the idea that all life lives with one another in perfect harmony, and that we should always honor our ancestors, because they live on through us. And Buddha is not a god, he's sort of like a role model, because he's fat, showing plenty of food and wealth, and he has long earlobes, which shows good luck in the Chinese culture.

Zygote------------->Embryo------------>Fetus------------------->Childhood--->Adulthood

^Stem Cells ^no cells ^Umbilical cord stem cells ^Adult Stem Cells

(Not as good for research) (Somewhat better) (Best Cells for Research)

Exactly, I know this.

Why do we even need to go into harvesting from zygotes and embryos? Umbilical cords and adults are the best and they don't cause harm to anyone.

Embryonic research has not had any real successes when compared to umbilical/adult cells.

My friend considers Buddhism a religion, and he's Buddhist lol. Anyways, that hardly matters. And thank you to whichever moderator edited my double post. I don't know what happened with that. Sorry the chart I made about stem cells was messed up. lol It looked fine when I was posting it. To my knowledge, and talking to people who are in the field, they DON'T want to harvest from embryos, but rather adults and umbilical cords.

It might be where you come from. And what you define religion as. You need a god for religion right? Buddhism has no god.

But anyways, I don't think there would be any argument over stem cell research if they didn't use embryonic stem cells though.

*stares at off-topicness above her post*

Anywho, you're right. It's the use of embryonic stem cells that bothers people. Otherwise there'd be little to no major moral opposition.

The only reason people even know embryos have stem cells is because the media blew it out of proportion. The literature I read mentions umbilical cords and adult stem cells, nothing else unless they're arguing about stem cell research and how embryonic stem cells aren't used.

Isn't that so true though? Everyone I hear talk about it is all like "but they're killing innocent babies!" And for the most part they are not even using the embryos!!! They aren't as reliable as the other ones. And don't even get me started on the topic of cloning. It seems like everyone tries to say that Stem Cell research is there for the purpose of cloning entire humans. *Shakes head* I don't think people even realise how many diseases or deformities we will be able to cure through this sort of research.
