janalseiya
I've recently found the time to start watching tv now a days and I just realized how poor the quality of most of the tv shows targeting children are today. I mean when I was growing up we had the educational shows like lamb chop, ghostwriter, Mr Rogers. Today it's just idk more violent, with little to no morals. Even power rangers 16 years ago they had infomercials to teach the benefits of reading and writing and I don't see any of that today. Sorry I had to rant, it was just driving me nuts
Unstream
Watch Nickalodeon or Disney in the morning (9-11ish). That's the "educational TV" time.
livvy
Which doesn't make any sense, because kids are at school between 9 and 11 AM. I completely agree; TV has gone south since I was a kid... and that was just 15 years ago! ~ Livvy
FutureTXTurkey
Although I agree 100% that kids shows these days bite the big one! I will say that today's kids are under a lot more pressure than they were even when I was young, and that was only you know 10 years or so ago, so with that in mind I think taking a little of the education out of their shows, and making them a little more entertainment just for entertainments sake does provide them a necessary place of escape. Plus todays kids just aren't engaged by "educational" programing, they mature so fast now they would see right through a show like Lamp chop, and be like, "This is my free time! Don't try to teach me math!"
livvy
Very true, FTX. I would love to go on about how it's a shame that kids are growing up so fast these days, but (1) it'd be off-topic and (2) it'd make me sound like some 60-year old with their stories about "When I was a kid, I had to walk two miles to school and back, uphill both ways in snow up to your waist..." I agree, however, that they wouldn't really be too interested by educational TV anymore. But TV hasn't just gotten uneducational; it's gotten downright stupid. I mean, I used to think Tom and Jerry was silly and immature; some of the cartoons and Nick shows now are... :S by comparison. ~ Livvy
FutureTXTurkey
Absolutely, like for a while there was that show "Butt Ugly Martians," I just about vomited when I saw it. Just tacky mind-numbing bathroom humor every time you turn around.
Revenge
TV is stupid now. I barely ever watch it anymore. I've only had two occasions in the past year where I was bored enough to watch TV. The first time was horrible, just garbage left and right. The second time though, was last week I think. They had a marathon of the Powerpuff Girls. I don't care, I watched every single episode of that as a kid, remembered it all watching it now, and watching it now it's easy to see it was one of the best shows ever made. The art style, animation, storyboard of the episodes, and voice acting were all quality work, and every episode I saw was memorable in its own special way. I was exited to see the new episode they were going to show that day, the first in five years I think (it feels so much longer), and what I saw was dissapointing. I was glad they had all the original voice cast there and managed to fit all of the recurring characters, but the plot wasn't what it could've been. As for the art and animation, all the other episodes were hand drawn ('cause that was how they did it then) and everything flowed smoothly despite the high speed actions going on most times. This one was made in Adobe Flash and looked like one of the fans could have made it by themself. I know it was just a special that was started in october, but after seeing all those other episodes right before (some really good ones too), makes me feel like they didn't really commemorate the anniversary to what it deserved. I've seen these other shows too. They take kids for granted, like they're stupid, because they know kids will watch anything on TV if it tries to be funny. But it's not. It's not witty or clever and any character based humor is set around a personality stereotype. I know any good shows that I've seen my nephew and his friends don't because it's not a crudely animated brainless cartoon. I watched Ben 10 because it was well animated, had a good plot setup and some really good action. I don't watch the new series 'cause I got completely lost in the story (I'm guessing the movies were a part of it, but I didn't watch those 'cause they were crap) and I don't know what the hell is going on. I watched Avatar 'cause it was a complete exception to what I'm talking about, and that's over now. And they even got rid of Toonami. I swear, whoever's running these stations are idiots. Please tell me something I missed, because I missed something.
jun
Hmm, well, to say the least. i do not agree at all. Where i was from, shows that appear there are edited FOR kids here. Which, in my opinion, they edit to much for kids. And, now with all these new channels that everyone is getting, they have channels for Kids only. Now! Before you all complain about this you DO know.. that the Kids shows stay on for a long time, and enough time for Preschoolers and Kindergardeners, which is who they are targeting. the other shows, are Y7, which is mainly 1st Grade and up. Now, also, this is just where i come from. When i was a kid, a lot of the shows were exactly the same as they are today. (The USA ones). I am just saying :/ I do not see anything wrong with the television is now as it was then. But then again, i think this would be better in the rant area now XD
̊ ˉˉ ̊
Well, I've always preferred cartoons with a good plot to them, and that's what I see is lacking most often in tv shows now. That's why the only channels I watch are the history/discovery channels (& the others that are owned by the same people & play informative stuff) But now those channels are getting filled up with way too many "reality shows" That's why now I use the internet more than the tv, and actually watch the programs I want to watch when I actually can. Revenge
I'm fine with preschool shows (well most of them anyway). I mean shows for the 7-13 demographic. That's where you see the big difference.
Unstream
I've never really watched TV. Like Revenge mentioned earlier, I can't believe they got rid of Toonami. That was like all of the anime on TV, and it's all gone now. The only things I watch nowadays is the Colbert Report and Family Guy, only because they're both very satirical, and I find that funny, but it's definitely rated PG-13. As for little kid shows, there's still a good amount of them if you know where to look.

Then they started putting wosre programming in it. Then they changed the entire theme and started putting their daytime shows in it. I remember coming home to watch dragonball/Z (GT failed) on toonami every day, those were the good times ;b

That's where you see the big difference. Yeah exactly. Max and Ruby, Blues Clues, Backyardagains, I watch those with my toddler niece and newphew and those are pretty quality children's programming. The shows my 6 year old Nephew watches however...Mostly I can't stand them. Just nonesense. Although there are a few shows left from when I was younger like, "Fairly Odd Parents" & "Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends." Those are pretty quality. And the Disney shows I don't enjoy, but at least they have a plot and they aren't just random loud potty humor.

Revenge
Walt Disney hasn't died yet, technically. If he knew what they did to his company, I bet he'd blow his top. <_<
Strategos
I remember the good TV shows, and I agree with all of you. It's just become a lazy form of entertainment that has zero effort put into it, just to produce revenue. It is completely stupid, but hopefully it will change back in 5-20 years when some of our generation begin to move into high-executive position at media companies and remember the old TV shows. Walt Disney hasn't died yet, technically. If he knew what they did to his company, I bet he'd blow his top. He's dead. Legally. He was cryogenically frozen after he was certified dead. Unstream
But not all of the TV shows are bad. I mean I love the satirical ones nowadays like the Colbert Report, Family Guy, and Futurama. Edit: Sweet 900th post :D
livvy
Yea, but for younger kids? My 8-year old cousin goes around quoting Family Guy, and he doesn't have any idea what he's saying. It bothers me, because the messages of Family Guy are not the things I'd want my younger cousin learning. Maybe that's just me though. =\ ~ Livvy
Unstream
Well Family Guy is not meant to be learned, but to be laughed at. And it does demonstrate the idiocy of our society pretty well sometimes. And for younger kids, there's always Nickalodeon, and though Cartoon Network used to be pretty good, I've found that most of their new cartoons are really disturbing, like the Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack... When little kids are watching inapropriate shows because there is nothing good made for their age group to watch, It shows how much TV programmers have let us down. But at leat the crude & inappropriate jokes/comments go right through their heads, I'd hate to se them know what they mean at that age. Revenge
I've seen kids with a vague understanding of what Family Guy talks about, but they don't really understand it. I hate seeing kids who have these shows give them a bad example of things they're not ready for. But that's a bit off topic. So yeah, kids stuff sucks now. I completely agree; TV has gone south since I was a kid... and that was just 15 years ago! ~ Livvy hahah This part is true, I am a HORRIBLE and I mean HORRIBLE insomniac, at 5-6 am, the weirdest cartoons are on, I mean what child WANTS to watch these shows? Who's AWAKE to watch these shows seriously I wish they would come out with more tapes or dvds of all the good shows in the past but those won't be possible b/c certain companies lost the right to distribute. I mean Ghostwriter.. KPBS lost FUNDING for the show yet hey sesame street is still going on strong, and it was one of the highest ranking shows too. Kids are forced to grow up faster, look at what we've had to go through? I've seen a lot of families where the 7yr olds are more mature than their own parents. During the election the kids were able to watch and actually understand as well as make their own choices on which candidate they would've chosen and why. At first I believed it was the parent's influence but they voted for difference reasons AND a different party haha. Children HAVE to grow up faster, look at the tv shows we DO show, it's all about dating and drama.. all my 2nd graders were going out with one another it was CRAZY! I don't been the puppy love stuff either It's the you're cheating on me yada yada.. this is what our shows are teaching are kids. Plus all of the pressure we put on them. I'm a student teacher, and I just found this out. Did you know starting now they expect all and I mean ALL 8th graders to KNOW Algebra at the least? TV shows gone bad, kids being influenced it's just not fair! I swear if I had today's technology 20 years ago I would've saved ALL of my fave shows and not allow any of my kids to watch current television.. hahaha *sings* what's the story, WISHBONE.. Thanks for reading my rant. haha

There are so many crass animated movies aimed at familys. Why don't we get good and cute stuff like Bambi and Toy Story anymore? Now it's Madagascar and Shrek. Why can't people just make good age-appropriate shows? Ones that older people can watch with younger kids and not wince or roll their eyes at? janalseiya
You mean you can actually stand to watch it? LOL Some of my friends who are in college are always watching Courage the cowardly dog, sponge bob, etc and I always know that is my cue to A. Leave or 2. Find something else to occupy myself with like talking to someone else who does not want to watch it..
Revenge
Courage was good. It was made to mock horror movies, and did it pretty well without making anything too scary. They canceled that one for no reason too. Spongebob was classic, or was. Everything after the third season lost its charm, and yes, charm was there. Nothing super fantastic, but something was there.
