So... I have this large video. It's about an hour and a half long. Thing is, I only need and like about 40 minutes of it.

So, I thought about splitting the file and combining the parts I want into a smaller clip.

I try Windows Movie Maker. It can split the clip, but I can't seem to save the parts I want into a combined video file. Either it just won't let me, or the process suddenly stops at a certain percentage (depending on what I wanted to combine).

After at least, 50 tries, I've given up right now... But yeah, any programs that can combine/split videos and allow me to save them as well? Preferably free? :)

Well for the task you described, Avidemux seems like a good choice (although I don't actually use that program very often, so I'm not sure how efficiently it works).

Hm... Seems good, but is there any way to convert the files to wmv without causing errors?

The file I end up making is just a FILE format. So, I can change it to what I want (.avi, .mov, .wmv, etc)

I need a .wmv file, so I added .wmv to it to make it one.

But, when I open it, I get an error message...

Any way to convert to wmv without errors?

Well I'm not sure about that... are you sure there isn't a feature (export, convert or something like that) built into the program somewhere?

Ah, I've found your problem - Avidemux doesn't support .wmv files. Unfortunately I don't know any video editors that do support .wmv, but I'll look around. :)

Well after a few searches, it seems that the simple program below is close to what you're looking for.

Well I personally wouldn't trust all those reviews, but I just noticed that the program wasn't free... in that case I really can't find a program that fits your needs (there are plenty of open-source ones for Linux that I know of, but they don't have Windows versions). :sad01_anim:

I saw a program like you were describing at Best Buy yesterday. It was $55, but I don't remember what the name was. Anyway, if you're out and about, you might stop in and ask an associate what you should look for. That doesn't mean you have to buy it, you'll just have a better idea of what you should be searching for online. Maybe get a few recommendations, that way if you can't find one, you could look for another.
