A Couple Drawings

Recommended Posts

Heh I thought I'd share a couple drawings with you guys. I still have to take a picture of one of them and import it into my computer because my scanned version stinks XD So I will post the other soon... so here is one of them I guess:

(This one is my newest)

I'll just edit my post and put the other in when I get it on my computer.

I'll also see if I can draw a new picture today... I need the practice.

Edit:

This drawing is kind of old, but I still like it. Image shack resized it a lot so... its not that detailed...

Nice work, Scarebear. ^^

I really like the first one. It just reminds me someone, although I can't exactly place who...

Jessica Alba maybe? That's who I was trying to draw but the face turned out a little too long so it does not look that much like her, but it kinda does in the eyes and the lips are similar.

Wow, what nice drawings. You shade beautifully. Just a little proportional problems, but otherwise, very nice. The second one kind of scares me, I think it's the big eyes and the darker pencil. Keep up the good work.

Yeah I have had problems with proportion, although I am really improving, it still seems to haunt my drawings, but less and less.

You know what is weird about that drawing? I actually made the eyes smaller like 4 times XD Makes you wonder how creepy it was before. The darkness of the drawing/shading was just me tying to add contrast so it looks more realistic. The hair had some really dark spots because she had some black in her hair near the roots. (I know the lips are a little too big, it may not seem like it but if you looked at the reference I used you'd understand XD)

I would post more drawings, but I won't because most of them have really bad proportion and they are embarrassing for me to even look at XD

These pictures are really good. Any proportion problems can usually be solved by measuring as you draw. You'd be surprised how much a small change in the placement of the eyes or the mouth can change a face.

How long have you been drawing? I'm thinking for some time since beginning drawers don't usually understand putting in tones and controlling line weight... Not to mention, with your first picture, you varied the lines in the hair much better than in the second one.

There is this drawing book at the art store that came with this special measuring thing and I read some of the book while waiting for my mom to find a picture frame lol but it said to do that, I have thought about doing something like that but have never really tried.

I have been drawing since... well to be honest.. .my earliest memory of me drawing a person with a pencil was when I was like 4 XD Of course it looked like a blob but thats when I first tried. Although my biggest improvement has been in the last 6 months. I made a progress sheet, and its funny because I've even improved a lot since I made it, like a month ago XD I've really been experimenting with hair, and lighting, and reading books and guides made by more experienced artists helps too :P I even learned about some really good tools to use, and some blending techniques from looking at these guides.

From this one guide I learned about kneaded erasers, which are cleaner and last longer, and I also learned how to blend shading with a tissue (for large shaded areas - usually for darker areas) and a tortillion (no sure how to spell or say that XD - but they are used for smaller more detailed parts, and they come in a variety of sizes)

Those drawings are great - the shading is simply terrific!

Thanks :) My shading is improving, I can see that. You know who has really good shading and really inspires my drawings? It's this really really amazing artist who's screen name is Cataclysm-X on deviant art. You should look at her drawings. She is amazing :O She has made many guides that I have learned a lot from.

Oh, Yes.... when I discovered the kneaded eraser... I fell in love. It allows for so much more detail. I admire how you pretty much taught yourself how to draw by reading books. That's so insanely old school (minus studying under an actual master artist).

Have you tried cross hatching rather than smudging? I've never heard of that "T" thing...

I sometimes cross hatch. That is sometimes how I make the darker spots and shadows on a drawing (instead of scribbling really hard like some people do o_O) but I like to blend, at least parts that I want to be smooth and have a soft look large dark areas too.

And BTW the T thing (not sure how to spell it) is like a paper pencil: its a piece of paper rolled into a cone like shape that resembles he shape of a pencil. They are used to blend smaller more detailed areas without destroying detail. They take practice to use, because if not used right they can make a drawing look really bad (if overused)

I kind of have taught myself to a certain extent, but really I have had many teachers. Maybe not a real teacher in a real classroom, but I have learned a lot from people who take time out of their daily life to sit down and tell me how to improve my work (people on sites like deviantart and sheezyart) and then there are the people that makes these wonderful tutorials that tell me some techniques that they use to make their art look great, and then there are the people that write these books. They might be gaining a lot of money from selling these books, but the reward I get from reading them is, in my opinion, priceless...

Just for the LOL of it I am posting my progress sheet I made like a month or 2 ago. It's funny because even since I made this I have improved. After new years I am going to make another progress sheet to show the improvement throughout 07, instead of just from April to late october early november. I admit that this year I have made more progress than I have in 5 years. Though there was some improvement over 5 years, this year I have made lot more effort and I have worked more on improving more than I ever have. Anyways here it is:

Now the thing that kind of tickles me is that people that I showed this to thought my cartoonish drawings were "charming" and "cute" and did not think they were bad, but that I was just trying to create my own style... but to be honest... I was actually trying to draw more realistic drawings XD

I talk too much... lol Whenever I talk about art I always manage to make a long post XD

I like reading/writing long posts - you should see some of my roleplaying posts. :P

I can see the improvement on that sheet, even though I personally can't draw to save my life.
