Whoever gets this question right then u can either post here or neomail me(liza_pizza_2_3_2_2) Here is the question: 9_9_9_9=9 How is that possible? Use any math operation(addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) to fill in the blanks Prize: I have alot of things so i'm still thinking about it... When u are answering...Leave ur name, ur neopets username and one prize that u would like(please not very exspensive items like paintbrushes..reasonable prizes:))..so I can send u the prize! REMEMBER:The first person who gets this question right, they will get the prize. Well, Good Luck!
nannerz
This actually took me a while...but I think I got it: 9 - 9 * 9 + 9 = 9 9 - 9 = 0 0 * 9 = 0 0 + 9 = 9 I'm just doing it because it was a neat riddle. :D I don't want any neopets prizes, just the satisfaction of completing it if that's okay ^^
liza2322
Good job! That is correct!! Are you sure that u dont want any prize? Well, thank you very much for participatingin my math problem contest! And thanks!
nannerz
Was fun thanks liza :) And I'm sure I don't want a prize, heh.
liza2322
Alright then.. well thx for liking my contest so much:)
Eric
Doesn't BIMDAS indicate that you should multiply first? :P
nannerz
Yes...I wasn't following orders of operation because there were no blanks for parentheses. If you wanna get technical, it's: (9 - 9) * 9 + 9 = 9 Happy? :P And where I come from we called it BEDMAS...but I've actually never applied it x_x Math just makes sense..without memorizing acronyms xD
antiaircraft
Actually if you do any high level mathematics BIDMAS becomes absolutely essential for the sake of your sanity... Still, I wish I hadn't missed this. XD
nannerz
Actually no. I'm just saying you don't need an acronym to do math, it all flows logically. I took advanced calculus courses as electives, so I think I'm doing okay. :P
antiaircraft
Ah - I wasn't referring to BIDMAS the acronym, I was referring to the general rule of doing one form of calculation before the other (unlike some primary school kids I had trouble with >.< ). nannerz
Ohh okay good :) The concept of course is pivotal :P I'm just horrible with acronyms :(
antiaircraft
Same here - I hate to memorize. I prefer to figure stuff out. But I've been forced to memorize formulas and stuff more and more lately...
nannerz
Yeah there are some basic formulas and identities you will have to memorize...but the good thing is they make sense and half the time you can derive them :)
antiaircraft
As far as identities are concerned, I only memorize a select few and derive the rest. The Malaysian syllabus is really sucky by international standards - they get all the students to learn and memorize stuff, but the students rarely have an actual understanding. nannerz
Yeah I hate the ones that just make you memorize. I also prefer deriving things myself. :) And math education here in Canada is horrible, HORRIBLE. I'm so lucky both my parents took advanced maths in their university degrees. xD
antiaircraft
I feel your pain - I'm lucky that my parents enrolled me into an international school following the British syllabus instead of the Malaysian one. Maybe we should discuss this in another topic, since this is rather a bit :offtopic: for this board.
nannerz
Oh yeah...maybe a good idea, but it IS about math D= *scoots off board mumbling something about a good math riddle so I stay on topic*
