Chipmonker
A minimum wage bill, which would increase minimum wage to $7.25, just made it to the President's desk on Friday. It won't be signed into law though as it is attached to that Iraq bill that we've all been hearing about. But anyway, what do all you think about it? The current federal minimum wage is $5.15 an hour. This bill would increase that wage to $7.25 over the next two years. What would the pros and cons be? Should it become law? .Dan.
In NZ, the minimum wage is around NZ$10 an hour, which is alright considering how much things cost. The youth rate is quite bad though.
kikaown
If you raise the minimum wage, employers will just hire cheaper people illegally, putting the people who deserve jobs into unemployment. Leave it the way it is, at least people get paid minimum wage. Its sad but true.
Superfly
As a kid, who is going to be getting a summer job. I say RAISE THE MINIMUM WAGE! I'm sure if I knew different things behind it, then I would have more to add to this, but I just thought I'd give my 16 year old input. :P
Dillon
I say raise it a little bit each time that way people won't lose there jobs as quickly or at all.
Ellie_Penguin
I think it's good if you raise because, nowadays most jobs are kinda hard and need a lot of training (some companies do not even pay for the training!).
Chipmonker
I actually don't want the minimum wage to be increased. As a kid, who has a summer job, I know that my job will be on the line if the minimum wage is increased. I mean, let's think of McDs. They hire probably over 10,000 minimum wage earners across the US. If the minimum wage is increased 1.00$. That's going to cost McDs 10,000 more an hour. If we assume then each worker works an average of 40 hours a week ... that's $400,000 dollars a week not including overtime. And there are probably more than 45 weeks worked in the 52 weeks of the year. That is $18 million that McDs is NOT going to pay. So who is first? Me. Ellie_Penguin
Maybe they can make it so that the wage doesn't affect companies like McDonalds or supermarkets where teens work mostly at.
Chipmonker
Maybe they can make it so that the wage doesn't affect companies like McDonalds or supermarkets where teens work mostly at. But those are THE people who earn minimum wage. Minimum wage workers are the McDs, supermarket, factory, cleaning lady, non-skilled workers. And about half the minimum wage earners are younger than 25.
Ellie_Penguin
Well, right now even with that minimum wage people find ways to hire illegal people. It's going to be the same if they increase it. Or maybe make the law so that the minimum wage could increase only at places where the work is the "hardest". For example, people who work at factories are putting their lives in danger because of the machinery and depending on their position. So compare that to a cashier at a supermarket, I would increase the minimum wage for the factory people.
Chipmonker
I'm positive that a minimum wage increase would be unilateral. As to illegally hiring workers under the minimum wage, that should not exist. Business owners who do that should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Ellie_Penguin
Well, right now they're actually enforcing the rule a lot more and are also prosecuting owners who hire illegal immigrants.
Chipmonker
Well I am almost positive (90% sure) that the minimum wage bill will be passed within the next few days. The Dems attached it to the current war fund bill, which for $120 billion, the president will be forced to accept the tradeoff. The bill also includes tax breaks for the smaller businesses that that will be affected by the wage hike, but I really really don't want to be paying $4.50 per gallon of gas due to inflation.
