Guest Levy
Ok, I need some very technical help here. And I don't want best guesses. Would it be possible to transfer the registry from one computer to another without removing the hard drive? If I can't transfer the entire registry, could I just copy parts of it so certain programs transfered from one computer could work properly on another? It is a technical problem and I probably need a programmer to help me. You see, I have several programs on one computer but I don't have the installation files anymore. Would it be possible to transfer the program files from the hard drive and then the registry keys to run the program successfully?
Dillon
From what I have seen around the net. You cannot do that. But Thats what I got from the net.
antiaircraft
I've transferred programs successfully just by copying the program files, although this might not work with some programs. You should be able to transfer the registry keys, that much I know, but I have no idea how to do it.
Guest Levy
You see that's what I was thinking. But the Registry transfer thing is the big thing I am concerned with. I want to transfer the registry keys for Photoshop and Flash to a new computer. I'm not sure how to do this. Edit: Ok, I think I figured out how to do this. Mods, please close this topic. Guest EBIL Cybunny Easter!
Hmm, don't close it yet. Let me add a suggestion please. To export your registry into a .reg file, go to Start > Run > Type regedit. Then, click File, Export and give a name to your file, and select all where it says 'Export Range' (it will copy all of your registry into that file). Now take hold of that file, go to your other computer, and MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR REGISTRY using the same steps above. Now just Import the file that you created on the other computer. In case of problems, just import the backup file. :) Note that it's not recommended to copy registry files - it's too risky. Install the program instead if you can. ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR REGISTRY, THOUGH.
Guest Levy
I think I figured out how to do it. I just right click the folders in the registry I want to copy and I clicked export. I saved the reg file and added it to a floppy disc. I looked at the reg files on notepad, they look like they will add the keys in the registry automatically.
