well i was gonna trade for a pet, but the owner said she was waiting for someone to accept/decline a transfer she had set up. she said i might have to wait 1-2 days 'til she could trade. i said that was ok and that i'd wait. then someone whose pet i'd offered on earlier (i had kinda forgotten about it) accepted my offer and said she could trade now, so i messaged the person i was gonna wait 1-2 days to trade w/, and told her that i was trading with someone else. do you think i was mean for doing that?

I don't think it was mean at all. After all it's your decision and choice, not your fault other offers came up.

As long as you kept the other person in the loop, I think that's okay, and it sounds like you did :) It's just one of those unforeseen things.

I agree with karmacow--if you hadn't updated the person and you had instead left them hanging, that would have been worse. But you made an effort to update the person immediately.
