*>*>~ JPop ~<*<*

JPop, or Japanese Pop has been around for as long as Pop music has been around in the US. The JPop industry is now one of the biggest industries in the world, according to several resources.

JPop is made of two different types of music combined. Traditional Japanese music and Folk music. Due to the fact a lot of JPop is influenced by American music, you may find yourself listening to some of the songs and think "Oh, I've heard this song before..." but as the song continues on, you realize that you haven't actually ever heard that song and that it's interestingly unique in some way or another.

Currently there are said to be as many as 10 million individual and group artists signed by various record labels in Japan. Some of the biggest names currently on the JPop scene are:

KOTOKO

angela

Hamasaki Ayumi

Asian Kung Fu Generation

BoA

I'VE

Koda Kumi

Tiaraway

Hikaru Utada

Kajiura Yuki

Do As Infinity

L'Arc En Ciel

Sakamoto Maaya

Hayashibara Megumi

Okui Masami

Orange Range

Shimokawa Mikuni

Nakashima Mika

Some of these names may seem familiar to you, if not, no worries, if so, rest assured, you very well may have heard of the name due to an anime opening or closing song. Many JPop artists are called upon by the anime industry to sing a song for the anime to boost it's ratings and get more people to watch it. It's a common marketing ploy, and might I add, it's quite successful. I, myself, have watched certain anime just because a JPop group I liked performed an opening or ending song for that show.

Who all around the TDN Forum likes JPop? If it's something totally new to you, feel free to post in here and ask questions. My purpose of creating this thread was because I'm a huge fan of JPop myself and I noticed there wasn't another topic like it.

If you're a seasoned JPop veteran, feel free to post in here as well. It's always fun to find out what other peoples' taste in music is. ^_^

Happy Posting!

I have a strange gut feeling I'm the one who partially inspired you to write this..

I have one song..it's 'Pegasus Fantasy' by Yoko Ishida.

Well, in some ways, yes. I saw your post and I realized since there wasn't necessarily a huge group of people already talking about JPop it could be rather interesting to start a thread about it.

I hope you'll continue to expand what you've heard of JPop and try new artists. I'm not familiar with 'Pegasus Fantasy', but I'll have to see about listening to it ^_^

One of my all time favorite songs is "Lament" by KOTOKO. It's a wonderful song. You should really try to get a hold of it. It's from her album "Hane".

Does Anime theme songs and starters count as J-pop? I really love the Love Hina starter.

Yes, Anime theme songs and starters count as JPop. ^_^ Hayashibara Megumi is who sings the opening song for Love Hina. ^_^ It's called Sakura Saku. Quite addictive, ne~?

Ahh, JPop, it makes my life happy. :) I'm a big fan of L'Arc-en-Ciel and Yoko Ishida, both of whom have already been mentioned I believe; I like most anime theme songs too. I'll have to look for stuff by some of the other artists mentioned...eventually...I go to college in pretty much the middle of nowhere, and the Sam Goody in our mall did a disappearing act recently, thereby removing my one source of JPop within several hundred miles. *tear*

I'm not really into Jpop.

I mostly just like music from English speaking countries.

Well, most of the music I like comes from America, the UK, Australia, and a bit from Romania though.

But I'm not really into pop music itself but a tiny tiny bit.

Have you ever considered searching and shopping online for JPop? You can get CDs at most of your major stores online. It's a great resource for those of us who live in the middle of nowhere. Believe me... at least you have a mall. :hmmph: We just got a Wal Mart Super Center. (It opened this morning.) I go to college in a town that has less than 8,000 people in it. It's called Winfield, Kansas. Like I said, at least you have a mall. ^_^ Granted, I'm not used to living in this small of a town. I grew up in Wichita, Kansas, which is the largest city in Kansas for those of you who don't know. ^_^ I was used to having a large mall with almost any store you need. However, we didn't have as many stores as you can find in even larger cities.

Hey guys! One of my friends in the New York area was in a JRock band called Kirei, and they were so amazing that I got into JPop and JRock. So far, I've really started liking Ayumi Hamasuki, BoA, Chihiro Onitsuka, Hyde, Janne Da Arc, Luna Sea, Malice Mizer (Ooh, Gackt! :wub_anim: ) Pierrot, Porno Graffiti, The Scanty, Siam Shade, Sugizo, Utada Hikaru (AMAZING  ), V6, X-Japan, Yuki Kajiura, and Zilch. (I know some of these are JRock, but they're still so amazing that they deserve a wee mention.)
