Despite how dumb it sounds, it's a good attempt. I'm sure just saying that the mother is seeking damages due to her child being addicted to neopets is oversimplifying it. There are places in the world where addiction to the internet is a psychological disorder (I don't disagree either, it's called obsession). I'm not saying the mother has a basis for suing neopets, I just don't feel one bit sorry for them.

I'm taking an Introduction to Health class this semester, and my textbook listed Internet Addiction as a psychological disorder. I would've never considered it to be one.

I don't think the mother has any basis to sue on. She has control over (most of) what her son does. She can unplug the computer, cancel the Internet service, or even add filters so her son can't get on Neopets. There's lots of options for her to take, and all of them are more productive than suing.

But what does she expect Neopets to do about it, even if her son DOES have this alleged psychological disorder? Does she expect them to close down the whole site so her one son can do his homework? (He'll just go straight to another site.) If it were a real case where she was concerned of its effects on her son, there were many other things she could have done that would still blame the site instead of herself. She could have revoked her parental consent--he's 10, so he's not allowed on the site without it. If he lied and said he was 13, she could report him for lying about his age and being 10. She can force her son to self-freeze. She can block the site on the computer. Beyond that, she can restrict his internet usage so that he's only allowed to use while she's home.

It's obvious she only cares about money, and any court that takes the case will immediately see the alternative solutions that were obvious steps.

That's crazy! That's like the person who sued McDonald's for making them fat. o_O These people need some help.
