The Altador Cup is now more than a third of the way through its first round, and it's already had enough surprises, upsets, and emerging new contenders to last an entire season. It doesn't look like the heat will be letting up any time soon however, as yesterday's results brought a total of four sweeps, and it's not often that you see such decisive results in almost half of the day's matches. Nonetheless, decisive it was when Darigan Citadel and Roo Island met on the Yooyuball field - Lilo Blumario and his energetic team fought bravely, scoring their fair share of goals throughout the match, but the Minions had tasted first place and they weren't about to be denied, rallying across the board to claim Yooyuball and all three side games, consolidating their half-point lead in the standings. The second-ranked Krawk Island Pirates pushed hard to keep pace however, managing to battle their way past Team Moltara's impassioned supporters and raise their flag over all the side games. Yooyuball was a bit more of a challenge for Garven Hale's crew, as they found themselves having to constantly change tactics to ward off goals from Moltara's diverse, constantly adapting game plan. In the end the Pirates managed to end the match convincingly, leaving Moltara's fans simmering on the stands. In contrast, Moltaran Team Captain Aldric Beign was decidedly cool over the day's results, explaining, "There's no magic game-winning formula that works every time, that's something you learn early on when you play in the regional tournaments. Some teams have a knack for picking up on their opponent's moves and knowing how to deal with them right off the bat. Some teams are a little slower, that's not unusual. Inexperience is always going to a weakness for us, especially when we're up against an ex-championship team like Krawk Island, but I'm confident it won't keep us from the top. Not this season." Further along on the match-up list, two significantly more experienced teams came off the field with yet another sweep. Teams Maraqua and Shenkuu both have a reputation as slow starters, but this time around the Maraquan Mermaids managed to come out on top, continuing a string of victories following a warm-up period that, considering Maraqua's tendency to hang around the middle tiers for a full round or more, was unusually brief. It seems like Team Shenkuu, meanwhile, may take a while longer to recover their previous level of performance, as their result listing so far is rather devoid of decisive victories. This far into the tournament however, it's still too early to discount any team's tier one potential, especially one that's ranked so highly in the past. Neither Terror Mountain nor Brightvale have spent much time in the upper tiers before, but both teams have been hoping for a clear shot at them this year. Unfortunately for the Brightvale Wizards, Terror Mountain recovered quickly from the previous day's defeat at the hands of Team Virtupets. The Chillers knocked the Wizards back down hard, coming away with a clean sweep, and keeping themselves in the running for a first tier position. After their spectacular performance against Kreludor on day five, Tyrannia might have been hoping for an easy time against the defending champions from Team Lost Desert. The Desert Marauders haven't been doing too well this season, struggling with the usual post-championship lull known as the 'Curse of the Cup', but their supporters have a clear reason to celebrate today, as Leera Heggle's Yooyuball squad brought home their first victory of the season. The overall result might not have been an especially decisive victory, as Tyrannia still didn't concede a single side game, but as one Lost Desert fan put it, "It all starts and ends with Yooyuball! Once we can drive home the wins we need there, we'll have no trouble pushing everything else into place." Across the fence, many Tyrannian fans might disagree on that point, their team having been side game specialists for many seasons, but none of them begrudged the Lost Desert the victory. "Hey, I was just glad to see a great match played," remarked one fan. "If the only reason we came to the Cup was to see our team win every single time, well, that wouldn't be much of a sport would it? There's no fun in a one-sided battle." Distaste for one-sided battles is a sentiment shared strongly by supporters of long-time underdogs Faerieland, Kiko Lake, and Altador, and so the three teams made sure to spice things up a little, fighting back with all their might against their much stronger opponents. Altador was able to make its voice heard against Team Meridell's supporters, drawing even in Make Some Noise despite conceding the remaining games. Faerieland took things a little further, out-slinging Kreludor for a victory in Slushie Slinger, and also wreaking havoc on Derlyn Fonnet's well-organised Yooyuball formations, although they weren't able to avoid a loss on that front. Kiko Lake managed to one up both its underdog rivals, drawing Slushie Slinger against the Mystery Island Natives, and bouncing away with a win in Shootout Showdown. Meanwhile, Team Virtupets remains in a commanding position on the leaderboard, outperforming the Haunted Woods in both Yooyuball and Make Some Noise, while remaining even in Slushie Slinger. The Zombies were a little sharper when it came to Shootout Showdown however, easily swiping the side game away from the Robots. Looking ahead to day seven, it seems like things will be getting even more interesting. From a clash between first tier contenders Krawk Island and Terror Mountain, to the Lost Desert's battle to get back on its feet against powerhouse candidate Team Virtupets, to the underdog face-off between Teams Faerieland and Kiko Lake - it looks like Altador's ticket shortage troubles are far from over. This is AA, reporting for The Daily Neopets, signing off.
nikh
DC has done complete sweep against RI! That's the difference between being serious and being happy! Go DC! Lost Desert's first win... Moltara gained it's first win earlier than LD... Perhaps the change of defenders really make the LD team fall in quick-sands. Hope they don't recover from the curse until the DC match! ;)

God, Aldric. How is this possible? How can you be so optimistic all the time? ...And that's another reason why I like you. All right then. Let's put those words to good use. We'll show Roo Island, and the only color they'll be seeing out of their four will be red! Red hot lava! >: D
-Ryan
DC worked hard for that win. These results aren't suprising though, and I was hoping for an upset by someone on a slow day like this. I was hoping fot a bit more hype about the Roo sweep considering we're rivals and the last time we played them was the 1st tier playoffs but whatever. D: Good report, AA. ^^

Hope they don't recover from the curse until the DC match! ;) If we haven't recovered by then, I personally promise you that it'll be the very day of the DC match. After that, it should be smooth sailing no? I've never been so happy to see a win more needed than this one, not even from last year. We didn't budge at all on the standings but having a number other than "0" is a sight for sore eyes. The only thing better is a "2" now!

Hope Roo island has watery clothes. The tournament is going to be on fire! DC vs. Shenkuu! After defeating Shenkuu, we are going to take the magical orb of them and give to Dari... I mean GO DC!
