The Nova ROX Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 I'm just curious. I read this in a book and I wanted to know what other people thought. If a tree falls in a forest and no one's there to hear it, does it make a sound? :S
Mini-Chan Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 i think it does make a sound, but its just that no one is there is to hear it, since like it will go like *thump* onto the ground xD or rustle the leaves
.Dan. Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 This is an ancient rhetorical question. Surely, if no-one is present when it falls then no-one knows if it makes a sound, but then again, logically anything that moves like that has gravitational energy, kinetic and all that, and possibly a smidgeon of sound energy.
Mike. Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Moved to the Debates Forum I won't blame you for this one, it can really go either way.
Ellie_Penguin Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 I would say yes, because of the traveling of soundwaves.
The Nova ROX Posted January 5, 2007 Author Posted January 5, 2007 Cool. I wonder what would happen if a squirrel was in that tree!
buzz Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 It's just an arguement to the definition of what a sound is.
Empress Keiko Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 This question does not have an answer. No one is around to hear it, that means no one can prove it does. We all expect trees to make noises but that doesn't mean that they do always make noises. This post has been close by a member of staff (Chipmonker) because of thread's old age! PM me, Chipmonker, to have it reopened and/or for any other mod-ish duty.
