Are you superstitious? The realization that today was friday the 13th made me think of this topic. If you are superstitious tell why and if you aren't, tell why. I personally am not superstitious when it comes to things like black cats, walking under a ladder, breaking a mirror, etc. But that may just be because I have never had good luck anyways. I am however superstitious when it comes to the supernatural such as ghosts, psychics, etc. I guess believing in the supernatural would be considered being superstitious. What are your opinions?

I don't believe in bad luck superstitions.

I DO believe in Friday the 13th though, in a different way. Friday the 13th is always amazing for me :D 13 is my lucky number.

I spend a lot of time looking at the ground, examining plants, so I find four-leaf clovers almost every day. They have never brought me good luck. I also own a black cat, so I have no ill thoughts of them. Typically, I don't believe in many of the common superstitions about stuff like that.

However, I do believe in the concept of luck. I've just never noticed anything that seems to influence it. I have some very weird personal superstitions about things. On Neopets, I always donate the same amount to the Wishing Well each time, because I think it will bring me bad luck to change it. And, when playing D&D, I always "purge the ones" from my dice and segregate my lucky dice from my unlucky dice. I also get stuck on other routines, because I worry that it will be unlucky for me to change how I do something.

I also believe in ghosts, and I believe I have seen ghosts. I don't have any fear of ghosts, though. And I think that almost everyone is at least a little bit psychic. I just think that some people are better at listening to that little voice in the backs of their minds than other people. It's all about personality.

Nothing, because superstitions are stupid to actually believe in tbqh.

Ok, maybe psychics in a way. But not the "call-a-psychic" hotline kind. The human mind is probably capable of a lot of things and we don't even understand how it works completely. Kind of freaks me out.

I also have a black cat so I definitely don't believe in that one. I think every person has one thing they do the exact same way every single time for fear that if they change it their luck will change.

I'm not really a superstitious but I picked walking under a ladder just for the shear fact that people drop a lot of stuff of ladders accidentally so it is really just common sense not to stand under them. I don't believe that this has anything to do with it being Friday the 13th but as I was walking down the stairs today, I pulled a muscle in my leg. I went to grab the railing so I wouldn't fall down the stairs and my elbow cracked and popped out of the socket. Then again, my mom always says that if it wasn't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all. <_<

Another silly superstitious phrase my mom says is: if your nose itches, you're going to kiss a fool. Anyone else have silly superstitious phrases or whatnot passed down from the generations?

My family always says if your nose itches, you will have visitors. If your ears burn, someone is talking about you. If your right pal itches you will get money. If your left palm itches you will lose money. I can't think of any other sayings I have heard right now.

Aw, nobody ever talks about me :( :P

My dad believes 13 is actually unlucky. Like living on the 13th floor of a building means you're going to be miserable forever (or at least just as long as you're living there).

I don't believe in many superstitions, but the one that I always did believe in was the walking under a ladder superstition. 2 weeks ago my brother accidentally walked under a ladder. Not even a minute later, a dog started chacing BOTH of us.

Well, I have had some personal experiences with dead relatives. I won't go into detail, but my great-grandmother died of old age, now whenever we go back up to Seattle to visit relatives, I feel like someone's watching me even when nobody's there. Another time when I was littler I saw her, but that might just be me thinking things happened that didn't.

I think that almost every person believes in some type of superstition even if they don't think of it as one. I have found sites with numerous superstitions relating to almost any normal occurence.

I do not believe in luck superstitions. last years Friday the 13th turned out to be my luckiest year when I finally sold one of my million NP items on neopoints and finally reach the 1 mil NP mark. I do not believe in any of these since they actually never even happen.

Doesn't alot of superstition originate from some sort of common sense? Like the walking under ladder things... making smashing a mirror will cause an injury that you'll spend seven years paying off? :laughingsmiley:

Personally, I think superstition makes you notice things during the day that you normally wouldn't pick up. Like, finding a four-leafed clover makes you aware of a good thing when it happens, instead of taking good fortune for granted.

But yeah, I don't believe in superstition, but I take note of it anyway, since it can make me appreciate (mostly good) things in a different light. Although I've never heard of that itchy hand one, I'll keep it in mind; who knows?

See that's the thing with superstition. It happens once, and you think it means something. Do dogs chase you every time you walk under a ladder? Or even just anything bad that happens?

I really like sylphs_dream's response though. Sometimes you just notice things that you normally wouldn't notice, which can be good in some cases.

Actually, several times I accidentally walked ladders. And something negative would happen seconds later. This is why I believe it.

  • 2 weeks later...

I don't believe in superstitions at all. I love Friday the 13th, 13 is my favourite number. I LOVE black cats. Own two =]

And I agree with Sylphs, all superstitions sort of originate from something more 'believable'

I did a study on superstitions and its really quite interesting.

Like some hospitals don't have a ward 13 or a 13th floor etc

I can't remember the rest, but look them up its quite cool =]

I checked for Ghosts and Psychics...Like someone mentioned earlier, I believe everyone is psychic to some degree, it just depends on how tapped into it you are. I've even had detailed premonitions here and there.

And I believe in ghosts because I've been having experiences with them since I was a young child (I'm clear of paranoia, by the way). I go back and forth between fearing them though...Well actually, I guess I don't fear them, but I'm cautious; you can never be sure if it's a good soul or something sinister in disguise.

I checked psychics and ghosts =) Although i dont really believe ghosts are human dead. I think they are just spirits . As far as psychic I think that there are alot of frauds out there but I think there are some real psychics as well.

I don't believe in bad luck. It seems unreasonable. Bad things happen to people everyday, both good and bad. I don't see why today would be worse than yesterday, simply because it's Friday the Thirteenth. Just because someone else said so? You have to consider that these myths originated years ago by some guy just to scare the bejeesus out of his buddies.

But ghosts are another thing. I'm not a firm believer in the undead, but I do get the willies watcing the haunted house specials they show on tv in October. I'm not entirely sure about psychics. Could it be a coincedence? A supernatural Force? Who knows...
