Guest strophysicist
Some believe it is highly impossible. Einstein's Theory of Relativity states that it is impossible to travel faster than light. You would have to break the very laws of physics in order to travel that fast. It is true, we know of only one thing in the universe that can break the laws of physics. A blackhole is one of the universe's greatest natural phenomena. Which is why I ask this question: Do you believe the laws of physics can be broken or bent just enough that we may be able to go faster than light? If you believe so then when do you feel this may happen? 100 years, or 1 million years from now?
Meeptroid
I'm not entirely sure. It may be possible to bend physics to travel that fast, but breaking just about every law of physics is quite an accomplishment. I could certainly see something like that happening due to all the technology advancements, although I wouldn't expect anything like that anytime soon though. kikaown
Well, Einstein says its impossible, but then again, 100 years ago, spaceflight was impossible. 500 years ago, airplanes and cars were impossible. People used to believe that the world was flat. Of course FTL travel seems impossible; we don't have the technology to do it yet. Besides, what is the speed of light other than a number? Its just another speed, like 500 MPH or 5000 MPH. And the speed of light is gradually slowing down. Does that limit change with the speed of light? Will we not be able to go faster than 100 MPH in X billion years? There may be scientific theories to say no, but common sense, to me, tells me that it is, if not possible, at least concievable. To the last question, it won't be happening anytime soon. Our spaceflight still isn't completely reliable, and I'm sure that we will go through stages of faster and faster speeds. Foxy!
People and things have already discovered a way to move faster than sound- it makes sense that we would be able to go faster than light in the future.
Ellie_Penguin
I think it is possible, but in about 1000 years. I think they're too busy trying to figure out an invisibility cloak :laughingsmiley:
Guest strophysicist
Yeah I've heard about the invisiblity thing. I don't completly understand it yet but it does sound interesting. The speed of light travels a constant speed of 180,000 miles per SECOND! According to Newton's first law of physics, an object in motion stays in motion untill acted upon by an outside force. Foxy!
Yeah, don't talk to me about Newton- I learned too much about him in Physical Science, even if he did stste the laws of physics. But anyway, I imagine people will discover some way to travel faster than light- Maybe even in ouy generation. But probablt not... MY 400th POST!!!!!! YAY!!! I'M A SUPER MEMBER!!!! Guest strophysicist
Unless we have every single scientist on earth attempt to find a solution to FTL travel then it won't happen for a long time.
Radiance
Is sound faster than light???? I think people may nver be faster then light.. i just feel like that.
Guest strophysicist
Light is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY faster than sound.
cloudedsunny
If a law can be broken it's not a law. More of a guideline! :P I believe that the more we learn, the more questions will appear. Perhaps one day we'll all evolve into pure energy (well not US per se, our great {times infinity} grandkids maybe!) and then be able to travel faster than light because we ARE nothing more than light. I'd say that was MANY MANY billions of years away though. Think about it, the timeline of evolution (if you believe in that, which I tend to) is soo vast and still the life forms populating earth haven't evolved that far away from the general original forms. Rocks are still rocks, trees are still trees and whatever we originated as...maybe we have evolved far from amphibious amoebas but it has taken an AWFUL long time! Guest strophysicist
A law is still a law untill we find a way to break it, if it can even be broken. Have you ever read The Space Odyssey Series? It has talk of energy lifeforms in it. It is very good. 2001: A space Odyssey 2010: Odyssey Two 2061: Odyssey Three 3001: The Final Odyssey
MOPGhost
I think it's impossible unless you enter the TV and find out their sercerts.
Guest D Generation X
I believe it may be possible. We broke the sound barrier, and yes, light is much faster than sound, but maybe one day, if Humanity hasn't destroyed the whole planet yet, yes. Radiance
Light and sound is extremely fast, if humanz were able to surpass it.. that would seriously extrodinary. :guiltysmiley:
cloudedsunny
Off topic I know! But: Yes I read 2001: A Space Odyssey but not the rest. Sure helped in understanding the movie too! LOL how confusing was it! Book was much better. Anyway, back to topic :P
kikaown
Light and sound is extremely fast, if humanz were able to surpass it.. that would seriously extrodinary. :guiltysmiley: Umm... We have already surpassed the speed of sound...
Guest strophysicist
We have gone over 10x the speed of sound, but that doesn't even border the speed of light.
Lutarist Jake
We won't be able to. Sound is breakable, but definately not light.
Chipmonker
If it was even possible to get any mass going near the speed of light, what would happen at/shortly-after breaking that speed? I know that when going faster than the speed of sound, a barrier forms at 340 m/s because sound is a mechanical wave. But what about light? MOPGhost
I got a question: How fast is sound and light year?
Chipmonker
I got a question: How fast is sound and light year? At 0 degrees C the speed of sound is 331.5 meters/second (approx 740 mph) The speed of light is ~ 299,792,458 m/s (670,616,629 mph) A lightyear is the distance that light can travel in one year. Which is ~ 9.4 x 10^15 meters
MOPGhost
The lightyear isn't helpful. Anyways I learn a light year is about 20000x60x60x24x365= (Not sure)
Chipmonker
The lightyear isn't helpful. Anyways I learn a light year is about 20000x60x60x24x365= (Not sure) A light year is how far a photon / light particle will travel in one year when it going the speed of light. It is a distance. What you're equation says is, 20,000 distance-units-of-something per second x 60 sec. per minute x 60 minute per hour x 24 hour per day x 365 day per year = 630720000000 unknown-distance-unit per one year.
