Fatigue kicking in?

Day 13 yielded some not-so-surprising results, with half the games being sweeps. We did have some exciting matches, though, which our reporter AA is willing to comment on, after being arrested yesterday for poking in restricted areas of the Altador Colosseum:

ctp_863.gif"Thanks HBK. There's something of a surprising atmosphere here at the Colosseum today, and for once it doesn't seem to have much to do with the matches. Many of the fans are actually behaving calmly for once, a few even slept through a game or two in their seats! The slushies weren't slung quite so fast, the cheers and boos were a little softer than usual - even a few of the teams on the field seemed to be moving and passing a bit more slowly, if no less aggressively. According to some experts, this lull apparently has to do with the fact that today is round number 13 of the cup, a critical point where the scorers start slowing and the fatigue starts showing, and where the teams adequately trained for endurance start to slip ahead of the rest. Of course, the experts are hardly infallible - time will tell how well the Yooyuballers and their supporters hold up.

The matches today did seem to be rather lacking in excitement however, although that could have just been me after all those hours being interviewed by security officials. Most of the victorious teams didn't seem to have much difficulty with their victories, and that led to some rather predictable results (I would say 'boring results', but even with the fans this calm I'd rather not run the risk of raising a lynch mob). Darigan, Krawk Island, Maraqua, and Shenkuu managed across-the-board sweeps of Altador, Terror Mountain, Faerieland, and Kiko Lake respectively. The underdogs haven't lost their spirit however: just ask any of their supporters if they think their team can rebound from its unflattering position on the leaderboard, and you'll either get a confident "Yes!" or a punch in the face. Most analysts would disagree, but thanks to a number of brilliant sprints and comebacks over the course of this and previous Yooyuball seasons, almost every Altador Cup reporter out there has the phrase '[iNSERT TEAM] stunned analysts today' pinned to the top of their reference pads.

A more ambiguous outcome emerged from the battle between the Roos and Meridell's Knights, with the two teams drawing in all games but one. Team Meridell managed to effect a win in Shootout Showdown however, earning them a borderline conquest and keeping them in the running for group two. The outlook for Roo Island is looking more grim by the day, with the bold new strategical successes promised by Lilo Blumario apparently failing to emerge. In fact, the CEO of one of the team's largest sponsors, Dice-A-Roo Industries PLC., publicly threatened to withdraw financial support a few hours ago, although he was forced to make an embarrassing retraction after his secretary politely reminded him that such an action would be a violation of AC committee regulations. But it was, in fact, a Meridell supporter who reminded me that anything can and will happen in this tournament:

You are a reporter aren't you? So you're meant to be unbiased, right? Look, everybody this year was expecting the Roos to play like, I dunno, superheroes or something. You keep comparing the Roos to this year's top teams, and you kinda put them down when they don't perform like they're one of them, but you're forgetting one really important thing: Roo Island was never really a 'powerhouse'. Before they were champions, they were considered underdogs, even after they ranked second two years ago. I'm not trying to offend, I mean that in a good way, really. Some teams are just better when they play from below, y'know, with the element of surprise and all that. The Roos are good at what they do, no joke about it. Us knights are no pushover - we crossed them from three or four places up on the leaderboard, and we still only barely beat them. I think they have a lot more toughness and dedication than you give them credit for. You just have to stop expecting them to give more than they've actually got, because whichever way you look at it, that's bias.

And if that doesn't convince you not to judge a team hastily, just take a look at the Robots and the Fossils - Virtupets and Tyrannia, two underdog teams (at least in the opinion of most analysts) that have certainly been full of surprises this year. Neither disappointed today, achieving striking results against teams that, at the beginning of the cup, would have been thought to be much stronger. Tyrannia actually managed a victory over Mystery Island, and they now stand two places above the Natives on the leaderboard (once again, no comment from Volgoth). Virtupets was defeated by the Zombies, but secured wins in Make Some Noise and (extending their winning streak to 13 days) Shootout Showdown. Now, I'm no analyst, but I'm beginning to think we can expect some great feats from these teams in the near (or maybe not quite so near) future.

And that ends my monologue for today - this is AA, reporting for The Daily Neopets at Altador's Colosseum. Back to you HBK."

Thanks for your report! Alas, we're nearing the end of the first round, so we'll see how today can affect the standings so far, before teams play against one another again.

Does Shenkuu verse FL today... I hope so. :P

I can't wait for the second round, yay!

But, unfortunately, Fatigue starts it's turning of tables at this time of the Cup. :(

Why does the daily predictions page say LD beat KD yesterday? We beat them. :O

Whoops, fixed. Thanks for notifying us about this! :D

I find it very surprising that there is no mention of LD vs. KD. LD was supposed to rule KD and it turned out to be the closest tie I have seen so far.

Yeah, definitely caught us off guard. I underestimated you guys and barely played at all...Not doing that again though. Kreludor did get a news report on the Neopets Altador page, though whether its positive or not isn't for me to judge.

We really gotta take down DC today! We can't have them with the highest amount of YYB wins! Watch your step!

Lost Desert, we're not gonna let you win without one heck of a fight. I've played 124 games of YYB today. I refuse to lose.

And gratz to everyone who got sweeps today and also gratz to Meridell :)
