onime_no_kai
I know there are plenty of people on TDN that are much more tech-savvy than I, so it seemed like a good place to ask. :P So -- anyone who's spent much time on the Neoboards the last few days will know that the old "OMG FREE KRAWK JUST CLICK ON THIS SUPER-SUSPICIOUS LINK!!" scam has resurfaced again, and a surprising number of people have been falling for it. (NO, not me. :P) I have a basic understanding of CG's, or at least I thought I did, but I've been hearing some conflicting info and was hoping someone could set me straight. I'd always understood that a CG was a one-time transfer of information; therefore, once CG'd, clearing one's cookies is pointless because it's too late (and may waste valuable time because you are, of course, logged out when you do it), and that the proper response is to change word first and add PINS, *then* clear cookies if it makes you feel better. However, on yet another "OMG WUT DO I DO NAO" board, I saw someone say that clearing your cookies is the *first* thing you should do because it "cuts ties" with the CG'er somehow, and that if you don't the CG'er is still feeding info to the scammer and so changing word does no good (in other words, proper thing to do is change cookies first, *then* log back in and change word and PIN.) So my question is: is this true? Do people need to clear cookies first, or change word first? Thanks to anyone who can help!
Strategos
The original information you had was correct. Cookie grabbers can not be defeated by clearing your cookies. In this case, clearing your cookies will do nothing. The recommended procedure is 1) Change your password 2) Add PINs if you don't already have them 3) Log out and log back in. The third step is important before Neopets assigns a different cookie to you. As always, the speed at which you act can help you keep your account safe. Deepti M.
Luckily, I haven't seen that scam. Hopefully I won't have a slow moment and fall for it too. :P
