Guest strophysicist
((This is in my own words and asks different questions than HBK's earlier topic concerning Apophis. I wrote this with what I know, I didn't look at another site.)) ((And a quick note for HBK: My sig once said that Apophis was coming, it didn't say Apophis would impact.)) ------------------------------------------------- In Near-Earth orbit rests an asteroid with our name on it. Apophis could be that one. It has been checked and Apophis will not hit us on Friday April 13th 2029, but it will come close enough to dip below our comunication satilites. Earth's gravity will dramatically alter this football-stadium sized asteroid's orbit. But when it does there is one spot in space we do not want it to pass through. Nicknamed, the 'Key-Hole'. If Apophis passes through the key-hole then seven years later in 2036, Apophis WILL hit us. NASA continues to revise their observations, what do you think? Could Apophis go through the key-hole? Where could it hit us if it does pass through the key-hole? What kind of damage do you think it could cause?
.Dan.
So what exactly is the point of this topic? Do you want public opinion,or for people to just read your post?
Erika
I don't really think it would hit us, of course, if people were intelligent enough to do something (NASA people, etc) <_<
Mike.
What is a key-hole? I've heard it often, but I don't know what it is. And Erika, NASA or the world in that matter, doesn't have some super nuclear weapon to destroy an incoming asteroid. So chill.
Empress Keiko
I hope it doesn't go through the key hole. You can never be too sure about what damge it will cause anyway. What if it burns out a little in the atmosphere and makes minimal impact? That would also be good.
Ellie_Penguin
We won't know until one year before it hit us or even months, because those calculations ought to change anytime. If it hit us, then good for it XD so you guys better live your lives to the fullest.
Guest strophysicist
Blowing it up would be a very BAD idea. Instead of one asteriod we would have hundreds of fragments, and that would be alot worse. Of course we cannot be certain what kind of damage Apophis would cause but we do need to find a way of avoiding it. The key-hole is a small spot in space where if Earth's gravity changes Apophis's orbit and it goes through the key-hole then it will hit us seven years later. Mike.
But is the key-hole some transportation spot?
Guest strophysicist
No, it is an imaginary spot where if Apophis passes when if is effected by Earth's gravity, it will hit us 7 years later.
Ellie_Penguin
Maybe it won't pass through the key-hole. Hopefully, they'll update us on their predictions because if they've changed before, they will most likely change again.
Mike.
I'm sure by 2026 we will have better technology though. What are the expected outcomes if Apophis does hit Earth?
Empress Keiko
I'm sure by 2026 we will have better technology though. What are the expected outcomes if Apophis does hit Earth? You really can't be too sure. You never know what'll happen to those types of things. They could mainly burn up or barely be burnt in the atmosphere. Guest strophysicist
Wecan't be sure because we don't know what Apophis is made of. But if it is made of what we think it is then it will impact land with the force of about 100 nuclear bombs. If it hits the Pacific then we could have an enormous tsunami that would devastate any coastline visible from the epicenter.
Mike.
I hope it doesn't it the atlantic, then I won't be hurt. =D There isn't any fallout, right?
Ellie_Penguin
Maybe it won't hit us at all. But anyways, I'm sure the government is going to do something once the find out what really is going to happen.

cloudedsunny
I half believe in fate, so what will be will be. I think that the projections for the keyhole might be wrong, or the projected effects might be wrong, or it might come crashing down and create another ice age instead of us burning the earth to death instead. Who knows? Maybe it's the next midnight-2000 and nothing will happen at all :evo: I'm sure by 2026 we will have better technology though. hehe yeah have you seen all those shows in the 60s that thought we'd all be wearing silver spandex earth uniform space suits by now? We're in 2006 and our technology is only increasing fast enough to make the manufacturers staggeringly wealthy, and many great leaps in tech are suppressed so that certain other companies don't lose that same staggering wealth. I think researchers spend too much time researching certain useless (but lucrative) things and not enough time on things that could really help us. I want my silver spandex earth uniform space suit darnit!!
Chipmonker
Didn't scientists predict the chance of it hitting us or passing through the 400 meter 'keyhole' like 1 in 10,000,000? Wecan't be sure because we don't know what Apophis is made of. But if it is made of what we think it is then it will impact land with the force of about 100 nuclear bombs. If it hits the Pacific then we could have an enormous tsunami that would devastate any coastline visible from the epicenter. But if it did hit the earth, it would probably create huge tusamis that circled the globe, uterally destroy coastal cities and ships, kill hundreds of millions of fish and the people who rely on fish for food. Ellie_Penguin
well I'll be happy if all the fish died :laughingsmiley: . I don't like them. Yea chances that we will be hit by a comet is really low, but it isn't impossible and I hope they can do something about it before it even enters Earth's atmosphere. Ellie_Penguin
But you're a penguin! And like I have said, I am on an island so I like fish! But no one depends on it. There is a lot of food in the world. I can eat fried fish, now that's good! But I don't really like fish...I haven't eaten fish for about 5 years. Anyways back to the topic, if it hit us some species may become extinct so we might be left out without any meat either. There will be a lot of pollution and the weather will change dramatically. Ellie_Penguin
fried fish is the best! If the fishies die from an asteroid then all fishies would be fried! ohh we could build a gigantic fry pan! Well, I'm sure that when scientists have the final results, they'll be able to come up with a good plan to save stuff. For now, there's nothing to worry about.
