AntiGravityAzn
Anyone here use a Linux distro? I'm thinking about partitioning my hard drive and putting a distro on my HP laptop because sometimes I just want my computer to boot up quickly so I can look something up on the internet for 5 seconds...and Windows XP definitely does NOT offer that quick boot time LOL ;) I was just wondering if anyone has experience with Linux and/or has suggestions for a Linewbie :)
antiaircraft
Just to make a point here - 'Linux' itself is a kernel. There are a huge number of different Linux distributions out there, all with different characteristics and goals. Some of them can actually be horrendously slow to boot (openSUSE springs to mind here). But I'll stop boring you now. :P Puppy Linux and Damn Small Linux would be my recommendations. They're both tiny, efficient, and very fast Linux distros - you don't even have to actually install them if you don't want to, they'll work from CDs and other portable media. Moderator note: In this instance, use of the swear word damn has been allowed as it is the actual name of a product, and is not being used aggressively or with any intention to swear. It is for that reason that permission has been granted for it to be said here. However, it is a breach TDN Forums' rules to use this word usually, so please refrain for doing so as you will be subject to standard punishment.=Cameron=

I've been recommended to DSL, but for some reason my laptop hates it...lol. When I tried running it, the screen basically freaked out on me and I couldn't see anything but grey lines until I closed DSL. Of course, it may have been my computer. I haven't heard of Puppy Linux, but I'll run off and be a nerd and Google that, thank you! :)
antiaircraft
Or you could just follow the links in the post. :P And Linux has a reputation for graphics trouble, especially with newer hardware from companies like Nvidia (some companies don't bother writing Linux drivers, so Linux developers have to reverse-engineer stuff when possible). Usually there's at least one distro that works reasonably well though.
didosmom
I'm using Ubuntu and it boots up fast. I have both xp and linux here and I boot up on Linux when I need only internet. Or you can just set your computer to hibernate when you press the power button instead of shut down.
antiaircraft
I wouldn't recommend booting from hibernation all the time - it's actually a bit slower than booting cleanly (depending on what kind of load you have running at the time), and has been known to cause odd glitches with certain programs. Ubuntu is actually at the slow end of the boot time scale when it comes to Linux distros. However, improving boot speed is on the blueprints for the next Ubuntu release ('Jaunty Jackalope', due in two months). Any luck Jade? There are plenty more distros you could try if Puppy Linux doesn't work out for you.
