Unstream
So apparently there's this theory going around that that's when the world will end. The thing is, nobody seems to know the details. Can anyone explain what it's all about? Thanks in advance!
̊ ˉˉ ̊
I know the answer. People say that the Mayans knew that the world would end in 2012. If you actually do some research, you will find that the Mayan calender resets then. I think were currently in the 5th cycle of that. Strategos
From the LHC debate a couple months back, I quote Levy: December 21, 2012 is the last date on the Mayan calendar and is said to be the end of the world.December 21, 2012 is also the day a computer program known for scowering the internet for information, the Web Bot Project, said something horrible would happen. This program is said to predict changes in the stock market as well as even disasters. It even predicted something bad would happen in September of 2001, in June 2001. The Web Bot Project warns that a "worldwide calamity" is in store for 2012. December 21, 2012 is the date when our planet crosses the galactic equator. 2012 is the year computer models predict the poles will shift, north becoming south and vice verse. Unstream
How does the Web Bot Project work? I mean I doubt that by looking through the internet it can predict a meteor strike or something. There isn't that much data on the internet... FutureTXTurkey
If that's all true, then that is very scary... By 2012 though, everyone I love that lives somewhere else right now will be living in Texas, so I think I can be okay with the world ending in 2012. That even gives me time to graduate and get married and stuff...I just don't want something bad to happen while my family is all scattered across the country. ̊ ˉˉ ̊
Enough of this! The world IS NOT going to end in 2012. This "Web Bot Project" just looks around the web and finds random information, a lot of it. Terrorists use the internet, so that explains the 9/11 prediction. AND the internet is full of completely bull information, less than 25% of it is true. "December 21, 2012 is the date when our planet crosses the galactic equator." OOOOOOh big deal. That has nothing to do with the end of the world. "2012 is the year computer models predict the poles will shift, north becoming south and vice verse." We've been overdue for one of those for thousands of years. And that's only the magnetic poles. Easy fix for compasses and such, True north is now magnetic South and True south is now magnetic North. It won't change actual maps. I'm sick and tired of people believing the world will end in 2012 without even spending one minute to look up the FACTS, not opinions. So there's nothing to worry about, except for MAD
Strategos
Hey, I didn't said I believed it. He asked why people thought the world might end, I remembered an old topic, and I quoted Levy. I agree with you, it's a bunch of crap.

So there's nothing to worry about, except for MAD Well when the magnetic poles flip, it may leave the earth unprotected against the radiation from the sun, since the earth is protected by a magnetic field from radiation coming from the earth. That's the only plausible reason, and even then, it's rather unlikely. But yeah, I agree with you, it is probably just a load of crap. I don't believe it, I'm just wondering where the whole idea came from.
̊ ˉˉ ̊
I don't believe it, I'm just wondering where the whole idea came from.It came from people seeing stuff on the internet and not looking deeper into the situation for more definitive answers. So the truth was distorted and the mass hysteria rumor was started.
Ellie_Penguin
I guess that just gives people something to do XD. I personally don't believe the world will end, then. Whatever is meant to happen, will happen anytime and anywhere. It could happen right now, tomorrow, in a year, in 100 years or in a century. nuclophobic
Oh well. If it does happen, at least it'll be the end of the yeah. Lol. I can still work at the Olympics. XD
antiaircraft
Well when the magnetic poles flip, it may leave the earth unprotected against the radiation from the sun, since the earth is protected by a magnetic field from radiation coming from the earth. That's the only plausible reason, and even then, it's rather unlikely. Switching poles won't change the fact that the earth's magnetic field exists. :) And personally I don't think there's anything to say that the world will end in 2012. That's not to say it's impossible - we could have some sort of catastrophic disaster, such as a major asteroid impact, in 2012, 2010, or even tomorrow. It's not something you can easily predict. Midtime
Or perhaps some random guy will find and press a button marked "End of the World Trigger - Do Not Press under any circumstances" just to see what would happen. That would be quite likely, actually, if such a button existed.

Revenge
I guess that just gives people something to do XD. I personally don't believe the world will end, then. Whatever is meant to happen, will happen anytime and anywhere. It could happen right now, tomorrow, in a year, in 100 years or in a century. 100 years is a century... And yeah, there is no end of the world. The planet has gone through much tougher crap before, something like an unfinished calendar and computer guessing isn't gonna do much. There has already been a debate about this.

The planet has gone through much tougher crap before, something like an unfinished calendar and computer guessing isn't gonna do much. There has already been a debate about this. Lol and I was the one who made it. The thing is, when people say the world would end, I don't think they're thinking of the Earth ceasing to exist. I'm pretty sure they have in mind that all life or humanity is wiped off of the face of the planet. So when they talk about the world ending in 2012, the question that keeps popping into my head is "how?". How do they think the world in going to end in 2012? Is it the end of life or humanity? Or will the Earth cease to exist?
Cara
The London Olympics happens in 2012, maybe it will be such a shambles that the world will end as a result :P lol But seriously though you do tend to wonder how nonsense like this starts. You will always have ridiculous rumours like this one flying around. I remember there was a rumour going round my city that there was going to be a terrorist attack, it was fantastic actually as when I went shopping town was practically empty and I didn't have to queue once :laughingsmiley:
Micamone
I don't think it would have to be something huge, it could be something like what happened on September 11th. In a way, our world ended that day, and millions of lives changed. The world was no longer was the same( at least here in the US, i don't watch news enough to know if it really effected many other countries. . .) but World War 1 and 2 effected everyone right? it's kinda funny, i finish school, and turn 18, in 2012 ^_^
Unstream
This is interesting. This video here says that instead of the world ending on 2012, humans will evolve to love one another and become divine or something. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fbX4NJE6bE Am I the only one who thinks that's a load of bull? Lol micamone it's the same here. I graduate in 2012 and (hopefully!) start my first semester of college in 2012.
