Updates not installing

Hi, there seems to be some pretty knowledgeable people here so hopefully someone can help :)

I've currently got 3 updates for my computer that refuse to be installed!

I use internet explorer and have windows xp (media center edition). I learnt that some updates needed to be installed one by one, so I did that but these one's still won't install. I also tried switching off my firewall, etc as suggested. The only kind of message I get is "A problem on your computer is preventing the installation" (might not be the exact wording, but it's a problem with the comp. anyway). Well, like what kind of problem?? And how do I fix it? :(

One of the updates that wont install is - Security update for Windows media player 10 (I think that was my fault, I think I deleted media player but I can't get it to install again either! :eh: ).

I've had the computer for about a year now and these are the only one's suddenly causing me problems.....

Any ideas?

Well it's possible that you have some messed up system files/registry entries, although it's kinda hard to tell with Windows.

A few questions:

1) Is the problem occurring during the download of the update or the actual installation?

2) Are you trying to install the updates through the Microsoft Update website or Automatic Updates?

3) Is there a specific error code that comes out when you try to install the updates?

4) What are the 3 updates you need to install? If you could give me the Knowledge Base IDs (e.g. KB45325) that would be useful.

Hopefully I can actually give you some real help instead of just rambling. :)

A few questions:

The installation I guess. "Initialising installation" is definitely fine but then it says the installation failed.

2) Are you trying to install the updates through the Microsoft Update website or Automatic Updates?

I've tried both

3) Is there a specific error code that comes out when you try to install the updates?

No, not that I can see anyway - which is why I can't follow the troubleshooting bit on their site. If I try to install it via the automatic updates, I just get the box telling me what update it was and that it wasn't installed.

When I try via the website, it at least says, "Problem: A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed".

4) What are the 3 updates you need to install? If you could give me the Knowledge Base IDs (e.g. KB45325) that would be useful

Security Update for Windows Media Player 10 for Windows XP (KB936782)

Rollup KB908250 for Update Rollup 2 for Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

Windows Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP

And I've just noticed - Windows xp service pack 3 - which won't install either.

I'd really appreciate any help if you can!! Thanks ^_^

Okay, the most likely problem with your system is that some of the DLLs that Microsoft Update needs aren't properly registered. To fix the problem, you'll need to manually register those DLLs.

Just go to Start > Run, and run each of the commands below in turn - you should receive a message after you run each command saying that the respective DLL has been registered.

regsvr32 wuapi.dll

regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll

regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

regsvr32 wucltui.dll

regsvr32 wups2.dll

regsvr32 wups.dll

regsvr32 wuweb.dll

If all those were registered successfully, then you should be able to reboot your computer and install the updates. :)

Thank you, but it didn't work :(

I ran each of those commands in turn like you said, and got a little box each time to say succeded (and then I restarted my computer) but still, when I went to install the updates, they won't, it's just the same.

I'll try to give a little more information on a couple of them, I don't know if it's of any use though! -

Windows XP service pack 3 (KB936929) - It gets so far, another box comes up and says things like "Backing up files", then it gets to "Backing up registry" and the box just closes and another little box comes up saying, "Service Pack 3 setup error. Service Pack 3 setup cancelled" - then back at Microsoft's update site page, it just tells me again, "Problem: A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed".

As for Windows media player - I had thought maybe I uninstalled it (even though I couldn't understand why I couldn't re-install it), but when I go to my program files, I find it there. And if I open it there and then open a song from the media player, it plays. However, if I just go to my songs, right-click and ask it to play the song with media player, I get the message - "windows cannot find 'C:\program files\windows media player\wmplayer.exe' " - so, um, has it just been moved or something?

Also, when I went into the actual file of windows media player (went into program files, then into media player) there was one thing that said "setup_wm" and when I clicked it it goes straight to saying it's updating my media player with windows media player 10 - then the automatic download kinda box comes up saying it's installing windows media player 11 - but then of course I just get the message saying it was not installed.

Does that help any? *lol* I really have no idea, when it comes to those update numbers (KB etc) and the things you mentioned, I really don't understand!! :)

Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks for your help anyway :)

Well from the look of it, I think that something has messed up your registry (the incorrect path for Windows Media Player is a possible side effect). Unfortunately I can't really help you there. :sad01_anim: You'll have to find somebody who knows their way around the Windows registry.

Ok, well thanks anyway :) You were still more help to me than the Microsoft site!! :)

And at least now I know a bit better what I'm talking about! *lol* I'm always convinced someone is going to rip me off, so as long as I chat all knowledgeable ("there's a problem in my registry" :graduated: ), there's less chance they'll take me for a mug ^_^ hehe.

Thanks anyway.
