Books and Intelligence

I recently started playing again and noticed I never used the books/intelligence feuture in neopets. I got a few questions about it. What happens if i read my pets books? What happens if my intelligence stat goes up? How many different levels of intelligence are there? I know a book disappears after reading it but can i read my neopet the same book twice or won't that work? And just a general explanation would be very nice. I hope you all have a great day and thanks in advance :).

1. If you read a book to your pet, its' intelligence will go up.

2. There is an Obelisk Skirmish "boon" you can use, called "Strength of Mind". It "Grants the ability 'Mind Blast' in the Battledome, which uses your pet's Intelligence as its Strength boost, once per battle." If you like to battle in the Battledome, it can be useful. Of course, the boon only lasts for a week - not permanent. The higher your pet's intelligence, the more damage it can deal. There are some weapons/battledome items that require a certain amount of intelligence to use, or "unlock" other abilities, when the intelligence requirement is met.

Or, your pet can earn trophies for having read the most books - Neopian Book Award, and, Booktastic Book Award.

Or, your pet can earn three (3) avatars for reading books: HT - Rich, HT - Richer, and HT - Richest. All books are purchased from the "Hidden Tower" and cost a bit of NP.

3. Levels of intelligence can be found here, on TDN, along with a good tutorial on intelligence and books: http://thedailyneopets.com/articles/books-and-reading

4. Yes, books, usually, disappear when read to your pet. Generally, in a "puff of (colored) smoke". No, your pet cannot read a book it has already read. However, on occasion, your pet will read a book, but the book doesn't disappear. Nice, if it happens with a rare book, as you are then free to sell it, or give it away. Sometimes, your pet will not read a book. It may find it "boring". If it does, and the book has been released before 2015, you can try changing the Neopets website language to a different one. Often, you pet will be able to read it. Since 2015, Neopets no longer translates books/items into different languages, so the change language "trick" no longer works on books released after then. Neopets didn't intend for the books to be read by changing the language. The intent of pets not liking books was to try to make your pet different by having likes and dislikes - giving it its' own personality. This has been brought up, though, a few times, to the Neopian Times Editor. Some feel a pet unable to read a book is "unfair", especially if going for the trophies. "Scrappy" (current Neopian Times Editor) has mentioned it a possibility of removing/changing that restriction, but it hasn't happened, so far.

Generally, intelligence has few uses, but as mentioned, you can go for trophies (aka "bragging rights"), get avatars, max the intelligence stat out, try to have your pet read every book in Neopia, or use it as a "weapon", in the Battledome. One more note. There is another Obelisk Skirmish "boon" for increasing your pets intelligence called "Books Smarts". With it, your pet can "Receive up to four intelligence from reading books." Something you might want to consider, before letting your pet(s) read books. (Some people will wait to read books to their pets, until they get that "boon"). Again, this TDN article explains almost everything about intelligence and books. Give it a read: http://thedailyneopets.com/articles/books-and-reading

Also, take a look at JellyNeo's guide, as it covers a few things TDN's article doesn't: http://www.jellyneo.net/?go=petintelligence

I'm one of those people! I don't use my shop much, so any books I get if my pet's not read it already I store it in my shop, so the next time the Book Smarts boon comes around I know where all the ones he can read are without having to sort them all out from the stash in my SDB. :D

I enjoy reading books to my pet, even though there's no enormous benefit to it it makes me happy. :3

If you are getting back in the game and trying to earn NP, you may want to sell the more valuable books. I like to keep those since they disappear if read. (The titles and descriptions are sometimes clever and make me laugh ). Another quick way (which is free) to gain intelligence points is the Faerie Crossword Puzzle. They have the answers posted on the forum every day. You get more points if you do it faster so consider looking over the answers first. :graduated:

Yeah the intelligence gain is a nice little bonus, isn't it! Not sure how often it happens, but it's fairly regularly.

there are also a few battle items that require your pet to be of a certain intelligence to use them

bva_heavyrobe.gif(Heavy Robe of Thievery - requires 68 int + 200 mvt)

 bva_bluetunic.gif(Crisp Blue Tonic - requires 750 int - becomes a 100% life drainer)
